I hear deadlifts work your ass brilliantly... when I do them I mainly feel it in lower back.

They work your back primarily and glutes secondarily. You're going to feel it more in your back. They will not slim your waist. But they will improve your posture if you have slouchy shoulders and anterior pelvic tilt. They won't transform your physique. They'll help do that over the course of years.

They work your lower back, glutes and hamstrings mainly.
Focus on pressing your hips forward toward the top of the lift for optimal results.Team MuscleTech Rep

deadlifts was like steroids for me, I felt it mostly in my lower back when I did these, and over the course of a school year doing deadlifts and getting up to 500 max, it bulked me up! glutes wise, it even built that too, and my girlfriend loved it. haha but anyways, my coach/teacher in weight training said deadlift was a great size builder, and as a matter of fact, i never really benched and even made it to 200 for benching, but it built my chest up as well.
and funny part is i never realised it til after i graduated and stopped working out for about a year (didnt have my own gym/weights) then looking at myself and back in high school, i was stunned at how big i got, not massive or anything ridiculous, but for myself definitely a difference! make the deadlift your best friend but dont neglect your core or you may develop back problems.

I feel like I can target hams / glutes / back depending on how progress through the lift, whether I start extending my legs or my back sooner etc. I can 'fire' different muscles as the primary mover, but only in very small variation obviously, you don't want to still be leaning forward with your knees locked in full extension. This might be a luxury provided to me as a novice lifting 'light' weights.
For an advanced lifter though I feel there might be other things involved, namely that your glutes being such large and strong muscles probably aren't being taxed as much as your back during a deadlift, so depending on your muscle balance if your back is much weaker than your glutes it might limit you to a weight that is much less difficult for your glutes to lift than it is for your back, so you won't feel it in them.
I could be completely wrong though, it's possible that if your back is weak your glutes would just compensate for it by doing more work.-Crohn's Disease crew
