Did my trainer train me correctly?

My goal was to build muscle and my former trainer knew. I am not sure if his approach made sense so please tell me your input. He told me that nutrition is 90% of muscle building while the workout is only 10%! Now, I know nutrition is important, but saying it's 90% almost undermines the workout....

I was told by management to "speak to them for no longer than 5 minutes and then throw them on a treadmill and kick their ass." This isn't the type of trainer I am or...
