I enjoy going out and drinking so I don't want to give it up but I also want to make progress in the gym and play good footy on Saturdays so I am looking for some less harmful alcohol alternatives to beer. Not a huge fan of shots unless I'm already pretty well on my way so starting on shots is pretty much out of the question. Does anyone have any good ideas for what I can mix spirits with that is low in carbs, sugars etc? For those who also drink, what is your beverage of choice? Good ideas will be much appreciated!!

A bottle of 5% beer is roughly 150cal.
40% liquor 30mL shot is around 84cal.
Diet Coke = 0cal.
Hard liquor is as low cal as it gets.
If you're worried about performance on Saturdays, it's the alcohol, not calories that you need to be concerned about. You can try sticking to a low alcohol (4%) beer, or alternating high balls with plain diet pop throughout the night. And drink plenty of water before bed. However you do it, it just comes down to maintaining some self control.

I pretty much make alcohol my cheat meals these days. Like you, my friends and I enjoy going out to the bars on the weekends. While I have goals, I am not a competitive bodybuilder, so I'm willing to make the sacrifice in diet for social reasons.
With that said, I usually stick to healthier alternatives like:
Light beer - approx 90-110 kcal per 12 oz
Vodka with club soda, diet coke, water etc. - approx 80 kcal per shot
You really want to stay away from sugary mixtures like margaritas, Long Island Iced Tea, etc., as these tend to pack on loads of extra calories.

I go for beer when I drink. Takes a lot longer to drink than standard spirits, so less calorie/alcohol consumption over the course of an hour if you're like me and like to hang around the bar a lot when you're out. There's also about a cup of water in every bottle, so you're less dehydrated the next day.

There are calorie-free methods of getting intoxicated. I am not recommending these substances, just making a point.

Exactly. I am talking about getting retarded (15-25 drinks) 1-2x a week, not 1 or 2 beers once or twice a week. I'm not a competitive bodybuilder or anything and enjoy going out so I am happy to cop the negative affects but I'm trying to limit them. The hangover is not my issue its trying to stay as trim as possible so basically what I'm asking for is any low calorie alcoholic beverages that people enjoy. Thanks guys.

Ketel one and soda for me...vodka and club soda. There's about 75-100cal per drink and no carbs. Add a few squeezes of lime juice and you're golden. Or a vodka diet...
Other suggestions are good too! Dark spirits make me sick beyond belief though.
Or just go straight grain alcohol...

Martin makes some good suggestions on his Leangains site. Otherwise, why not just make sure to prioritize protein earlier in the day and reduce your calorie intake to allow your alcohol consumption later in the evening?
With that many drinks, the calories would be the last thing I'd be worried about though.
