$$$ Least harmful ALCOHOL $$$
Hi I was wondering I am currently 24 years old 190 lbs 6"1 currently on a bulking diet taking in about 3000 calories per day who has just started lifting.
I am currently working on the Mark Rippetoe "starting strength" routine.
I have been taking this whole new lifestyle very seriously and havn't strayed an inch.
But I am human and do need to go party once every couple weeks.
I was wondering what would be the less harmful booze or beer to drink for someone like me. Can I get away with beer since im bulking or am I not seeing the big picture?
Thx for any help

well if you drink beer for like maybe once every two weeks or so, i don't see a problem with it as long as you compensate for the calories and you work out...my preference is vodka and some lime juice...still calories in the vodka but none with the lime juice

Well, make up your mind. Are you human or a bodybuilder? Partying every couple of weeks and drinking is to frequently in my opinion. I guess it really depends on what your goals are, and how far you want to take your body. But everytime you drink alcohol you decrease your testosterone levels which haults protein synthesis, and therefore stunts muscle growth for that day. So your talking 2 times per month your stunting muscle growth, do that all year, and were talking 24 days that you wasted of optimal growth.
And I don't buy the whole I'm human and have to party thing. I'm 20yrs old and and in college, and I don't go out and drink, I go to some party's but i'm always sober. But then again I am a competitive bodybuilder.
If your not competing and you just want to have a good build than go ahead and drink, If you want to achieve something special step it up a notch.

MOST hard liquors have about 64 calories for a 1oz serving. a regular 1.5oz shot would have about 100 calories. this includes rum, tequila, gin, vodka, etc... sweetened/flavored liquors (like malibu rum) have more calories because of the added sugar
MOST of the "lite" beers have about 100 calories. they can vary anywhere from about 90 calories to 110 calories but are generally all about the same.
A 3.5oz glass of red wine has about 75 calories
I believe the most drunk you can get with the least amount of calories would be hard liquor + diet soda
rum+diet coke/dr pepper
tequila+diet squirt
i'm sure there's lots of good mixes that i don't know about. (share em if you know em )

although i love a good tasting beer better than most any liquor, trying to stay in shape i usually go for the liquor... through my exp partying through college, can tell ya for sure that the liquor is gonna put on less weight for more alcohol buzz if you are drinking shots or with diet. flooding the body with alcohol + plus the carbs from beer is not a good combo getting drunk off of. probably a tad worse for your liver though, same effect on testosterone per amount of alcohol, less calories. light rum gin or vodka is usually your best bet. stay away from liquers and other sugar enhanced alcohols.

You might be more worried with not what you are drinking, but what you eat when drinking. I know most people, myself included, when drinking get stupid and eat tons of garbage.
But yeah, Bacardi 151 + Diet coke is pretty nice

What I Prefer instead of going with a diet drink mixed with vodka.. Why not get some but very lil nutritious value.. What I Do is get your standard Vodka or clear drink whatever u prefer.. and mix it with Vitamin water.. The vitamin water at least has some vitamins and minerals,, and even potassium to replenish your electrolytes. It doesnt taste all that bad.

vodka + diet juice or rum + diet coke. Also I thought 1g alcohol=7 cals not 9 cals, not like it really matters though.

1g of alcohol does equal 7 calories...When I drink I drink rum and water, not too strong. That way you stay hydrated while you drink (which I believe to be just as bad a problem as the extra calories and the test. level. Drinking once every couple weeks won't hurt you in my opinion. If you were to the point where such a minor bodybuilding setback as a few drinks would upset you, you wouldn't be asking the question in the first place.
Before you go out to drink, treat it as going to bed. Eat your bedtime casein shake or cottage cheese before drinking, the protein will help keep you somewhat anabolic while your drinking, helps a little bit.

i wonder how bad an occasional 1-2 glasses of red wine is? like how bad is that gonna lower your testosterone and limit your growth? a glass a day is supposed to be good for your health but i guess that is probably too much for a bodybuilder? my dad drinks a glass a day.

Red Wine
I'm gonna have to say organic red wine would be the best, its full of antioxidants. Of course that is not from a caloric perspective just a health perspective. Any alcohol in large quantites is going to be very bad for you no matter what it is though. They did a study on dementia in older people who consumed a small amount of alcohol like 1-2 glasses a day. They used beer and red wine and the red wine group far surpassed the beer group. Don't remember where I read the study but hey look it up if you care. It's what I try to drink, but it usually ends up being beer just because I'm at a bar and a dude ordering wine looks weird.

mixed drinks are for pansies. real men and justagirl take shots. if i remember correctly, a shot of jack or black rum (my personal favourites) = around 97 calories
i do, however, miss kahlua+1 cup of icecream+1tbsp of chocolate syrup+1 cup of milk blended up and topped with whipped cream and sprinkles.... : ' (

I am cutting and had beer the past two saturdays, about 12 each of those over a day. I am still losing. I was a little bloated the next days though.
Drink once in a while and you are ok.
Alcohol is never good for you, so i am not going to go there, but when I get to my maintenance weight or bulking I have no problem with beer one day a week. Heck even gouging at McD's or something one day a week hardly makes an impact. I do feel like hell though post-meal there.

Like somebody else said, if you can handle shots of Everclear that would probably be the best. 190 proof... I've done one and it made my eyes water and my nose run, as well as my throat burn for like an half hour.
Like 4 of those and you'll be good to go I'd imagine.
