I'm here until Sunday, got a flight at 4 and gotta be on the subway at 1. I'm stayin down town literally a block away from the WTC. St. Patty's is gonna be nuts today, we're heading uptown for that then chill in in the park all day. You visit any firehouses while you're here?

50 AMR EMT's laid off because they voted against a pay cut of 10%-15%.

Sitting at the airport, not ready to come back. Trip awesome and the test went good. St paddys day was a blast. Central park always awesome tons of good eats. A damn good steak. And visited hook and ladder 8 this morning. Awesome to say the least and of course welcomed with open arms.

i studied all the meds, etc before i went to school and could recite crazy stuff word for word. then i couldnt do a BLS assessment on a patient because i spent all my time studying paramedic stuff and forgot the BLS stuff. get good at ASSESSMENTS first and you will destroy it as a paramedic. they teach you the drugs in school. they teach you how to read ekg's and do IV's. they expect you to come in already knowing how to do assessments and BLS skills

This.
I know it sounds lame, but hes right, just make sure you have all of your BLS sht down. Its not going to matter if you show up with some meds memorized if your BLS skills are weak. If its just for the sake of learning on your own...go for it. I wouldnt worry too much about any of the ALS drugs at this point, but i would recommend learning more about the drugs you are allowed to use at the BLS level.
As an EMT you are taught how to properly give a few meds, and the basics behind why you give them. Study the pharmacology of them to really understand why we give them. Go more in depth with NTG, ASA, oral glucose, albuterol, etc. There is a lot more to know about those drugs besdies "NTG is for chest pain" etc.

There is a very strong chance that they will ask you:
Why do you want to work in this field?
Why do you want to work there specifically?
Describe one instance where you worked with a team to accomplish a goal.
Stuff like that. Have a few stories ready to tell them...seriously. 99% chance they will ask for some.

Not necessary for entry level, but could be useful down the line for officer and Chief positions(who the fuk wants to be a Chief??????????) and for making connections.
The key thing is to sell it in an interview, but don't be a snob about it, because you will be a toilet scrubbing **** bag probie scum 5 dollar cum dumpster until you work hard prove yourself in your probationary year

repost from this thread
Academy/Recruit School(for me and my friends)
-Arrive 1.5-2 hours early
-Study together and quiz each other before class/lineup. Make sure everyone is squared away on their uniform. Boots are shiny. Learn to shine boots now. NO loose threads hanging on your pants or shirt. Best way is to use a lighter and sometimes a nail clipper to get ride of loose threads. Before inspection, you will help inspect each other. Mind your gig line!
-"Yes Sir", "Captain ______ sir, Recruit 2rude with a question _________________sir?"
-You are their to become a part of a team and learn the department's way of doing things. No individuals, no hot dogging, etc. You will be rooted out if you are selfish. If you got teamwork, the academy class will be alright
-No excuses, if you don't know, you don't know.."I am sorry sir I don't know but I will get back to you on that sir".
-Pack something you can eat quick, so you got more time to study and practice skills on your lunch(depends on your academy). I alternated between a turkey, ham, and peanut butter and honey sandwich with 1-2 pieces of fruit like orange, apple, banana. You will consume massive amounts of water and gatorade. Dilute your gatorade with water, 50%-75%. For snacks, granola bar and nuts. For dinner at home, protein shake and carb heavy dinner.
-You will have your strengths and weakness.....you must help and encourage your brothers at all times! If your fellow Recruit needs practice, offer to help practice with him at lunch.
-If you see something that needs to be done do it right away...........no more paper towels, go fill them up for example. If you made a mess washing your hands...clean up after yourself!!!
-Manage your time when you get home, write out what you need to do...shower, eat, homework, study, shine boots, make lunch, practice this, etc.
-Start getting to know your brother recruits ASAP. Learn everyone first name. You will know their last name because it is labeled on helmet/gear. Me personally, I didn't like it when a brother recruit calls me by my last name seems very un intimate, that is for the drill instructors and academy staff to call you by your last name. By graduation, you better know at least a few things about each recruit. Don't underestimate this, this is a Brotherhood, don't let it die.
-No walking on the training grounds!
-Be positive, keep the faith, I know it sucks to hit the alarm button in the morning and only getting 4 hours of sleep every night.
-Keep extras....pen, socks, shirt, pants, paper, watch, etc. someone will need it, you may need it
-Attention to detail!
-If you have a class captain or squad leader, don't focking talk back or give your opinion..STFU
-Listen and STFU, no one cares about how you did things before
-Work hard, get close to your brother recruits, take care and help each other out..you will do fine.
-No Blue Falcon, Buddy fuker ****!!!
YOU are your brother's keeper
it is as fun as it looks!!!!

Here's my advice one interviews, obviously you can disregard the fire stuff but I hope it helps.Get some friends who will absolutely destroy you. You want them to know that whatever they ask you've already been there and done that. Tell stories.
Like GHABB said, not necessary but would be useful down the road and it does show commitment to the job. I've brought the idea to a couple career FFers and most told me get a degree in something not fire related after your AA. It shows you have a broader understanding of the world and when (not if, you will get hurt at some point) you can have something to fall back on if you're injury ends you're career. You don't want to be 40 and have done nothing outside the world of fire/EMS. I have a friend from my academy going through CSULA's program right now, he likes it but I have not seen him apply anywhere to actually get the job since he started. You're P-card is more important if you really want in the paid brotherhood.
As a side note, I found my preceptor and it's game on. The central valley of Cali better get ready for me. Can't wait for april.***Misc Firefighter/Paramedic Crew***

EMT-Basic checking in here. I have been working for about half a year now as a basic, and I love it. I want to go onto paramedic, but I'm scared. I heard the classes were tough, and what if I don't do good? Should I get more experience as a basic, and just keep going to college for generals right now? Should I just jump right into the paramedic program?

does anyone else find it annoying when people say "get my P-card" or "once i get my medic i'll for sure get hired". I know a lot of people who have P-cards but dont deserve to be called paramedics. it's getting to be like a FF1 where you can just get someone to sign off on it and you may or may not remember it in a year. paramedic schools in my area are a booming business and they dgaf who they pass as long as the tuition check clears. everyone wants to be a firefighter/(paramedic) but no one wants to actually BE A MEDIC./rant
my advice for EMT-Bs that want be paramedics/"get a p-card" is to work in EMS, preferrably 911 obviously, but forget about the fire service for a while. my preceptor and i used to LAUGH at retarded-ass FFs on calls even tho we would both jump to work for their dept. we're the ambulance and this is a medical call so we are in charge. when we stand by on a fire, you're in charge. until then, move out my way or do xyz task.
I look at it as 2 jobs in one. you are a firefighter AND a paramedic and should be able to either one by itself no problem (and both at the same time), no complaints. "eeeh i hate working on the box i only like the engine" ya well why are you a medic then go work as a FF/EMT and be the equipment carrier on 90% of our calls.
But fire calls are so bad ass tho" ya when theyre legit. however ive had plenty of acute transports that were WAYYY more bad ass then spraying water on a trashcan fire.
all im saying is dont go to paramedic school unless you really want to be a paramedic. there are plenty of ways to get paid as a firefighter without being a paramedic. you're better off spending that time/money/energy flying around the country taking rad fire classes and testing in every major city. (the south hires TONS of ff/emts)
