i'll be honest, i didnt read that. but before my first meet, i will
this is a GREAT article also, an interview done by Eric Cressey with Jay Floyd, Ross Bowshers, Dr. Tom Deebel, and Steve Coppola:

Yeah. I'm strongly considering entering power lifting competition myself.
I was wondering what sort of weight would typically place in the 132 class.
Currently, my max bench is about 230
But I think my deadlift and squat suck.
Deadlift is like 285
Squat is... I dont even know. When I hit like 300lbs I almost feel like I'm not doing the entire motion. That and I'm scared to try and max <.<

Great post.
Any advice on warming up for a meet?
I think I'm gonna do my first meet in January.Workout journal: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=116712111
NOTHING is sacred.
"BUT... it's way too easy to get caught up in all this ****ing minutia- like the kids on the Teen forums who won't eat regular peanut butter because it has 4g of sugar or whatever, ATG nazis, obsessing about every part of training, etc. Simplicity works." -101CavGrunt

Who cares where you would place? I mean, I know you do, but your first meet you have so much other crap to worry about and learn, really, that it should be the last thing you are thinking about. Doing lifts under contest conditions is radically different than doing them in the gym.
Yeah, take your time, do most of your warm ups with lower weights, such as the bar, 95, 135, etc. Do not wear yourself out with heavy weight ahead of time. After 135, I jump to 185, 225, etc. but do only singles. At this point, I am warm, but my CNS needs to get ready to handle heavier weight. Always remember that warming-up is not working out, it is doing enough to get the maximal effort from your body without injury.
Congrats, and good luck.

Thanks so much for this, Arlecchino. I've read several pl meet primers now and this is one of the best. My first meet is in a little more than a month and I'm gettin pretty stoked!
I think for my first meet I'll open with a weight I can do for 5, then a weight I can triple, then my 1RM. Gotta keep the ol ego in check... haha. There is no greater natural advantage in life than to have an enemy overestimate your faults, unless it is to have a friend underestimate your virtues.
