Is taking protein before bed on an empty stomch a good idea? I've heard that if there is nothing in your system such as an increase in insulin response or other carbs/protein, the whey protein will get oxidized and be useless. Can someone help me out on this whether I should take it before I sleep. Thanks a lot!

Protein before bed is good. The reason people say not to use whey before bed is because it gets digested so quckly. You are better off taking casein protein before bed since it digest slowly and will last you through the night. Cottage cheese is a good/cheap source of casein. You want to take protein at night to preserve and help rebuild muscle not b/c of the hormonal stuff.

This. There's more than a passing suggestion that whey isn't even that ideal for post-workout; milk (20 percent whey, 80 percent casein) is perfect for that time, and perfectly fine for pre-bed too.
But bottom line, if you hit your (appropriate) macro targets for the day, you don't need to worry about slamming protein before bedtime. Your body won't "go catabolic" or anything like that. It's time for a Breakthrough.
