Tipping is a capitalistic system.
lol @ all you closet Communists who think food industry workers and delivery drivers should all be compensated the same regardless of the quality of their work.
These threads are always hilarious because all these miscers come out of the woodwork thinking they're alpha for stiffing another person who depends on tips as part of their income. If you don't support tipping then stop using the services in which tipping is customary.
How do I know there are so many miscers frauding? I worked as a delivery like 8 years ago for a year and I was only stiffed on something like five different occasions out of thousands of deliveries (Not counting one poor old lady who was 110 years old and bought a weekly pizza from us and paid the exact amount in spare change).Misc Bicycle Club - https://www.strava.com/clubs/armstrongballclub

Always tip gratuitously unless the waitstaff REALLY screws up. It's not about "can't," but rather "won't" for crap service.

I hate how people think it is absolutely mandatory to tip at restaurants.
If my service wasn't satisfactory, I'll either leave a chitty tip or no tip at all.
One time a while back the waitress forgot my meal and I had to wait an extra like 20 mins, so I crumpled up a $1 bill and left it on the plate when I was done. Most people probably don't go to these lengths lol"A quitter never wins, and a winner never quits." - Napoleon Hill

Isn't there like a 500% chance of this being another hate crime hoax considering the recent epidemic?
http://dailycaller.com/2017/01/10/wa...tead-of-a-tip/
Other reports of similar incidents involving waitresses have turned out to be hoaxes. Gay waitress Dayna Morales from a New Jersey restaurant claimed that a couple refused to tip her because she was gay. The couple later showed a copy of their receipt showing an $18 tip.
In another instance, a Red Lobster waitress wrongly accused a customer of writing “******” on the receipt. A handwriting expert concluded that it was unlikely the man wrote the slur.Misc Bicycle Club - https://www.strava.com/clubs/armstrongballclub

Everyone who eats out can afford to tip since it is only a slight percentage of the total cost. So when people say, "If you can't afford to tip..." they are clearly just trying to rile up an argument. I tip because it is a societal expectation at this point and while I rather have the restaurant owner pay the servers themselves and have the extra cost reflected on the menu, I know that is not going to happen in this country. But I noticed at a few places if you spend over xxx amount an automatic gratuity of 15% is added on which I actually prefer instead of adding up the tip in my head because I always end up over tipping.

I usually tip well, last night I left no tip on a 80 dollar meal. First time I haven't left a tip in probably 5 years.
This one last night had me raging.
Never got a refill. Asked her for a refill and she said she was busy, she was snarky and a rude bitch to my 19 year old newphew who asked if he could watch the Clemson/Alabama game.
Zero. Fuk that sloot.
Last time I left no tip I was a drunk and probably out of line and the waitress was ridiculously rude. We hit up some Perkins like place after the bars closed. I had a dog treat in my jacket from training my dog earlier, so I left that as the tip ontop of a 1 dollar bill.Last edited by Norrov; 01-10-2017 at 07:58 PM.

Ha. I don't tip the cashier at Best Buy when I purchase electronics, I don't tip the Amazon driver when he delivers my package to the door, and I don't tip the sales rep who fits me for a new suit, top to bottom, and checks me out... so why on earth would I tip for a meal that already costs me more than if I were to make the exact same meal at home? Because you carried my plate from the kitchen to the table? Because you filled my glass of water when I already said I didn't want anything? Because you constantly interrupt my dinner conversation trying to make small talk? Let's not even mention the fact that you had no hand whatsoever in the preperation of my meal.
I'd tell them up front I don't tip if they promised they wouldn't spit in my food, but that's not how the world works. Unfortunately, I've lived abroad for many years and am absolutely done with tipping; if your employer won't pay you a fair wage to the point where you have to rely on the generosity of others, that's basically upscaled panhandling and you should find a new job or, hell form a union and go on strike until the employer raises your wages.Nope

I actually did work for a business that customarily received tips for service. It was rare and usually only their change or maybe a buck. One day, the company decided to ban tipping. The same customers still insisted on tipping. I told them we're not allowed to take this but even so most times they wouldn't take the tip back. So it ended up just going into the cash registers.
My point is, even if you got your way and employers did offer their wait staff minimum wage, they would still for the most part receive tips. It's a custom that would take a long time to die out. Most people enjoy the opportunity for generosity. The misc seems pretty bitter about it for some reason. But some people like to say, "job well done" in the form of currency.
I think it makes a lot of sense. Why should two waiters get the paid the same if one takes forever, brings the wrong order, and forgets my refills versus one who is expedient, easy to find, gets the order completely right, and never let's me get to the bottom of my glass?Misc Bicycle Club - https://www.strava.com/clubs/armstrongballclub

I swear america is so strage about this whole thing.
The whole point of tips was that a waitress didnt get paid much so your help them out for their good service.
But now the employers intentionally pay them less because they will get tips. Effectively holding the customers ethically hostage,
"I dont pay her properly. So if you dont tip her she will have no money and youre a bad person."
Put it into context. Can you withold a fair allocation to someone, because they will make more through other means?
What if it was the other way around? What if i said im not paying for my food because i have to pay for tips?
What if i told the used car dealer that im not going to pay for the car, because i have to pay for fuel?
The problem is everyone is scared to be the guy that say its wrong and should change. I do tip in usa myself because thats the system but im not blind to how dumb it is.

I tip...but, I refuse to tell the wait staff before hand whether or not I'm going to tip. If the entire way you do your job for me hinges on whether or not you get a tip, then **** you. You don't get enough tips, your employer makes up the difference...don't like it? Can probably find a good cube farm in which to work for a static paycheck.

That's the beauty of America. If the serving industry pays so much less than other professions, people will start to fill other jobs instead. When employers can't hire a staff willing to work the wages they're offering they'll have no choice but to increase the wage in order to be fully staffed.

This.
It's not like going to a restaurant is necessary. If you don't want to tip, don't go out to a bar or restaurant.
I like how some people have to go through these mental hoops just to justify being a sack of chit. This is like complaining that you have to wear clothes in public when you don't have to in private. It's a custom you potato. If you don't like it, move to a country where tipping is neither expected nor desired, and don't come back.

This. Wife and I got some gift cards for some nice places for christmas. Used them up last week. Since we didnt have to pay for the meal and our service was awesome I took it as an opportunity to be extra generous with tipping and basically left what was about a 45% tip or so on the meal. Server was great, meal was great, didn't cost me any money, so it was an opportunity to show thanks for good service along with making someone elses night in the form of a bigger than normal tip.
I suspect it is mainly people with poverty incomes that oppose it so much535 deadlift.

Just don't complain when a cheeseburger costs $15.00.
Either way, your meal will come out to the same amount, within a couple bucks. Except in the situation where the servers are aware their income is not in any way based upon your individual experience that night you probably won't have that great of a time.Misc Bicycle Club - https://www.strava.com/clubs/armstrongballclub

You can also look at this on the flip side.
A tip is incentive for the server to go above and beyond to give good service. It's similiar to an end of year bonus that a lot of salary employees have in their comp plan.
Would you rather the cost of every plate be 15-17% higher in cost automatically? That's what would happen if the restaurant owner "just paid their employees more"
I'd rather have the option to tip for good service. What's the issue here?

Yeah, and if Australia instituted tipping as a custom, then the employers wouldn't have to pay their wait staff such high wages and your meal would be much cheaper. Plus, you have the ability to influence how expedient your service is.
