    Excessive daily water intake?

    I've always heard and read that 64 ounces of water plus another 4 ounces for each 15 minutes of activity is a good baseline for a healthy daily intake of water.

    Recently I read something that claimed that 64 ounces is too much water and can be damaging to the kidneys.

    Can anyone shed some educated light on this?

    gallon a day is recommended, where did you read its bad? i tend to drink around 2 gallon daily when active.

    One commonly cited reason for people overeating is that many mistake thirst for hunger. Personally, I think paying attention to the clarity of your urine is a simple, easy, and effective gauge of hydration. Sadly, I've heard people complain that even that is too demanding a task.

    Thirst is the best gauge, but assuming you're not taking supplements (particularly vitamin and minerals), then color of your urine can be a fair gauge too.

    P.S. My little pug has no trouble knowing how much water to consume.

    This is a good point. If you supplement with a multivitamin, your urine will likely be fluorescent yellow often, which is often the additional b-vitamins and carotene that is not absorbed by your body.
