    When to stretch?

I've read many times stretching before and after lifting weights isn't the best idea, but I am very unflexible and was wondering if stretching in the morning and night is okay, it's not right after or before lifting so I don't think there would be much problem. Is this okay?

Proper dynamic stretching before work outs can boost your ability to perform while helping to warm up and loosen up. Static stretching is only used at the end of work out as it signals the body to shut down and repair. If your not stretching at all you can stall your results. Stretch is a key element to help make the body produce new muscle fibers

    As often as you need.

Before and/or after is just fine. Static and dynamic both.

I prefer to do it afterwards (time permitting) because it does weaken the contraction of your muscle. If you stretch before or during (and if you do it before, you need to be WARMED UP), you will lose strength and power during your workout. that's my 2.

    Only read the OP.

Most people who spout off the bullsh*t about stating stretching weakening you are either stupid or ignorant. They've heard about the study done that shows static stretches weaken muscles and then proceed to parrot the bullsh*t, without ever reading the study itself.

The study had participants hold static stretches up to 3600 seconds. That is not a typo. Yes, some stretches were held for a full f*cking hour.

Then, what people don't tell you is that if you do dynamic stretching or even lower intensity resistance exercises, you'll return the elasticity to your muscles, thus offsetting the "weakening" from the stretching.

So if you static stretch and then do some dynamic stretching after or even some lighter weight sets before you really get into your lifting, you'll be fine.

    Cliffs:
Don't hold a static stretch for 20 minutes and then attempt a 1RM.
