He didn't break his arm, he dislocated his elbow. It's happened to many people before. Probably most famously to János Baranyai in Beijing.

I saw it live. Sa opened with 158 on the snatch and stood up with it like an empty bar. Then he went for 162 and that happened. He must be utterly distraught, I can't even imagine. Not over the physical pain, but the lost opportunity. He was the ONLY one who could have given the Chinese real competition, and this opportunity to do well on the Olympic stage comes only once every four years and is the singular focus of his entire life, and it was torn away from him in an instant.
