A question about deadlifts (and programming).

    Hi guys.

I am currently on a four day split and I am eating correctly etc. so no need to derail this topic. Anyway, my question is about dead-lift frequency. The split I am on works really well for me EXCEPT this: It has me doing deadlifts 3x6 once a week, and 3x10 squats once a week. Previously I was on Stronglifts which had me doing 1x5 deadlifts 3 times in two weeks.

I understand that more reps and stuff is for hypertrophy, and I do want a large back, but is deadlifting for multiple workset reps really necessary when I'm also doing other back exercises such as one arm rows, barbell rows, pullups and seated rows? I'm currently deadlifting 165-175lbs, but I feel I could hit 225lbs in a few weeks if I do 1x5, or even 2x5 (which I prefer, as I enjoy deadlifts!)

What exactly is the difference? Low reps for strength, correct? If I do that, I assume I'm not losing out on hypertrophy because of other back exercises that I do. Also, I'm pretty sure that deadlifting for one set (with warm ups, of course) will still build my back muscle.

Please correct my understanding and tell me whether what I'm doing is right or not.

Thankyou very much. Measly reps for serious answers.

I wouldn't do 3x6 with heavy weight each set. If you want, do 3x6 increasing weight each set, and work up to a 6 rep PR on your last set. I used to deadlift 3x5 with the same weight, and once I started doing 1x5 with heavy weight my deadlift went up a lot.

Thankyou very much for an answer.

Did deadlifting heavy 1x5 have an effect on your back size?

I think what I will do is do two warm up sets of half PR, then one heavy 1x5 PR. That way I'm still warming up, I won't get tired and I'll be deadlifting 3 sets in total so I'll be satisfied.

Oh, and obligatory reps have been given.

What does everyone else think? I think 1x5 is the way to go.
