I have suffered from insomnia for about 5-6 years myself too. It played havoc with not only my fitness goals, but daily life (schooling, social capacity etc.).
Before you start looking into pills to help you sleep, look at your daily diet, and daily activities and try to find things that might be keeping you awake, that you can eliminate/reduce. For example:
-Caffeine - tea/coffee/pre-workout supplements
(http://www.medicineweb.com/health/di...rb-your-sleep/)
Also, look at the time of day that you exercise. I find that exercising late at night sometimes causes me to lose sleep - the adrenaline from training still hasn't fully worn off. So try training in the mornings if possible.
Try to spend the hour before trying to sleep doing stuff that's boring and low energy - for example, reading. Also, try to keep the same pre-bed routine. Ensure your room is dark, and with minimal noise (I use ear-plugs every night now).
In terms of sleeping aids, this is what I have found with what I have tried:
Valerian root (herbal) - worked in the short-term (on the occasional night), but the effect soon wore off. I think it was more a psychological rather than physiological effect.
Zopiclone (prescribed) -worked in the same way as Valerian, however, I do believe that this has a stronger effect.
Melatonin (bought) - works well, however, like the other aids mentioned, isn't sustainable long term.
ZMA - didn't work
I think that pills should only be used as a last resort - you don't want to develop a dependency on them.
Hope this helps.

More than just melatonin, SHUT•EYE uses therapeutic amounts of Seditol that allows to body to relax, fall asleep... and stay asleep. Allow yourself 7-8 hours to rest with this product. You can find it in the store at http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/fus/shuteye.html or visit our site at www.fusionbodybuilding.com.
Tips on falling asleep, which aren't that easy for all of us - relax. Some common sense issues - stay away from stimulant containing products later in the day. Some find training in the evening helps to relax, while others find it makes them restless - find what works best for you.Chris Belanger | Vice President, Sales

I can say that Abyss, Animal PM, Melatonin, Valerian Root, Chamomile tea, and some other stuff Ive taken dont work. I did try a Fusion Shut-Eye sample and it worked well. If I get into another sleep aid I will get it. But Ive spent enough up until this point to not go OTC for the time being.

Don't expect a supplement company to wipe your ass for you, only YOU know what you eat, which pre you take, and how much folic acid you intake daily. Supplement accordingly.-POISON
