48/2(x+3)=288
48/2=288/(x+3)
24=288/(x+3)
24(x+3)=288
24x+72=288
24x=216
x=9
48/2(x+3)=2
48/2=2/(x+3)
24=2/(x+3)
24(x+3)=2
24x+72=2
24x=-70
x=-2.91666...

it's just an example of horrible notation.. nobody writes maths like that in real life.
it would then be 48 over just the two, or 48 over the whole thing and it would be painfully obvious what the answer was.Don't get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend. - Bruce Lee

the reason of the confusion between 2 and 288 is in the writing of the equation. some people see the equation as 48 over 2(9+3) which equals two, while others see the equation as 48 over 2 times (9+3) which equals 288.

48/2(9+3)
You have to solve the parenthesis first so you can multiply it by the number on the outside. Then you can work the rest of the equation.
2(12) = 24.
48/24 = 2
TWO.
