it's just an example of horrible notation.. nobody writes maths like that in real life.

the reason of the confusion between 2 and 288 is in the writing of the equation. some people see the equation as 48 over 2(9+3) which equals two, while others see the equation as 48 over 2 times (9+3) which equals 288.

You have to solve the parenthesis first so you can multiply it by the number on the outside. Then you can work the rest of the equation.
2(12) = 24.
48/24 = 2
