How many of you would consider them as a must in increasing bicep size?

It's not a must. But it's a great exercise.
They can be used as a lat or bicep exercise. Depending on how you approach the technique you can activate more biceps or more lats. Chin ups are my first bicep exercise on arm days (after 1 or 2 set light curl warmup). Because my back is completely cold when I'm doing them and using a very close grip while consciously trying to emphasize biceps I get a strong squeeze in my biceps with what feels like little lat activation. I admit that I suck at chin ups as is, unable to do more than 7 reps, but I still value it and look forward to being able to do them weighted.

Chins are a must have in any program. They work primarily the back but also the bi's and abs. Chins are one of those compound exercises everyone should be doing.
