How much are you guys taking? I'm just following the bottle and taking 3 pills per day. I take them with Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Here are the ingredients, per pill:
Natural Fish Oil Concentrate: 1000 mg
Total Omega-3 Fatty Acids: 300 mg
I'm 5' 10" and 190 lbs. I'm just wondering if I should take more to get the full benefits.

I take concentrated fish oil with 625mg Omega 3 per 1000mg capsule, two in the morning and two in the evening. I haven't done any scientific tests on myself to find my own correct dosage, but my mood's a lot better than when I was taking less.

Cant recall where or how I got the dose but I take 3x3 1000mg caps per day.
From memory it promotes better joint health and at that levels may help in the lean vs BF balance.
does it work?
D/K....but given I've had shoulder problems for as long as I can recall and the last two years have really been hard...this year with 9g F. Oil in the mix...my shoulders are almost perfect.
Cause and effect? Perhaps. Who cares though, right?http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=154678393

Found this

Fish Oil Supplements or Fish?
This question drove researchers to enroll female volunteers into a study. These healthy volunteers were randomly assigned to either eat 2 servings of salmon or albacore tuna a week, or take a 485 mg fish oil supplement (EPA and DHA). They found that the levels of EPA and DHA increased in the blood cells of both groups about equally after 16 weeks. This is good news for people who have trouble eating the two servings of oily fish a week recommended by the American Heart Association.
Can I Skip the Salmon Then?
The study authors don't recommend it. Fish has other benefits beside providing your body with omega-3s. Fish are a great source of protein and other nutrients that were not studied in this research. However, if fish is unavailable, it is good to know that fish oil capsules are good for you, too.http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=154678393

Studies have shown taking 6g or more raises the blood sugar in people with Type 2 diabetes.
Also,
Healthy people aim for 500 to 1,000 milligrams of EPA/DHA a day.
People who already have heart disease -The AHA advises them to consume 1 gram (1,000 milligrams) a day of EPA and DHA
People w/high triglycerides - the AHA recommends 2 to 4 grams of EPA and DHA a day from supplements, but only under a doctor’s care. A prescription fish oil supplement
called Lovaza has been approved by the FDA specifically to treat very high triglyceride levels.

Hey good article....
You wrote
"In the most recent fish oil + exercise study to date, Hill’s team examined the effect of fish oil supplementation (6g) on overweight hypertensive/hyperlipidemic subjects (24 men and 41 women) over a 12 week period [18]. Exercise was 3 days/week walking at 75% predicted maximal heart rate for 45 minutes. Body composition was assessed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Predictably, fish oil supplementation improved blood lipids and arterial vasodilation. As for body composition, fish oil by itself didn’t cause any bodyfat reduction from baseline levels, whereas the sunflower oil control gained bodyfat , but to an insignificant degree. However, fish oil + exercise caused a 1.1% greater bodyfat reduction compared to the sunflower oil + exercise control (1.2% reduction versus a 0.1% reduction in the sunflower oil group). But here's the kicker... The daily intake of the exercising fish oil group averaged 143.4 kcals less than the exercising control group. Factoring in the reduced calories of the fish oil group, we’re now looking at a difference of 0.32 kg (0.7 lb) -- less than a pound more weight loss in the fish oil group in 12 weeks."
How or why would researchers - so meticulous in controlling all the variables - NOT control something as critical and crucial as the calorie intake
Mind boggles
Having said that an extra lb of weigh loss over a 12 week period simply for taking some M3 seems worthwhile.

3.6 grams 1st thing in the morning
Dr Denese, anti-aging Cornell-trained MD, and author of the famous book featured on PBS on fighting wrinkles says take 3g all at once -- the time to take them is "first thing in the morning" with your high-protein no-carb breakfast.
High doses of fish oil will actually thin your blood. My friend is a gum surgeon and patients taking huge doses of fish oil make her work challenging.

Is there a method that's used by supplement companies to ensure lower levels of mercury? I mean do they check to make sure that the oil they are placing in capsules or bottles is safe? I understand there is a law suit against some companies regarding this problem. GNC and CVS Pharmacy being two of them.
[edit]Oops. Just checked and the law suit is for PCB's. Sorry. But, still, yuck.[/edit]Last edited by tonester; 03-23-2010 at 04:31 PM.
