Best way to improve 2 mile run?

Ok, I used to run a lot. But I haven't ran in quite a while. I was looking and most of the running threads I found were dated 2-3 years ago. The main thing they said was HIIT training. I wasn't sure if that was ALL I should be doing or not. Maybe switch it up?

*Oh, should I run every day? Or every other day?

    "try running"

haven't met a disappointed person yet with said advice.

    seriously.

    run.

    run 1/4 of a mile
    run 1/2 of a mile
    run 1 mile
    run 2 miles

all you have to do is get out and practice running if you want to be better at running.

lifting weights doesn't teach you how to run.
the treadmill won't give you the skills to run.
reading books won't give you the experience you need to run.
this forum can't lift up your legs for you to run.

    but running does.

start slow and build up on it, but just get out and do it already!

when it comes to running, form/breathing patterns
get those set and you're set.

    proper shoes don't hurt either.

I would run just about everyday, but I'd vary the intesity and distance of the workouts.

Will doing intervals help? Sure, but you'll also need to make sure you are in shape and have a fair amount of endurance. For that, you'll need to run just about every day.

Be sure to ice your feet, ankles & shins after every run so you can recover quicker and thus be able to run more frequently.

Also...get a new pair of shoes (or two).

Depends on what you are running for. Distance is better on actual surfaces but speed training on a treadmill can work very well .... your basic treadmill isn't going to be sufficient though.

So I can run everyday and still progress? My legs don't need like a day in between for resting? If not, then I'll start doing it everyday then! So, do ya'll think like every other day of HIIT for 2 miles, then the other days just a straight 2 miles, till I can pick it up even further? And maybe like on Sat or sun I can do a 3 mile run? Will rep what I can for answers

Yes everyday or at least 6 days a week for distance. You don't go all out everyday or you will burn out, but some form of running every day. Vary your intensity. On days you go faster do something like 800m repeats at 2 mile pace or something like that and then on the longer days slow it down for recovery. Also, if you are serious about running a good 2 mile you're going to need to run way more than 3 miles on long days, more like 10-15. Our distance runners in college that were milers or 5k runners ran closer to 70-80 miles a week, maybe more depending on the time of year.
    Best lifts (all gym)/2011 Goals:

    Squat: 405/Out-squat Rob's Bench
    Bench: 275/315
    Deadlift: 435/475
    Power Clean: 285/315
