Deadlifts are the best for that, use wrist straps so your grip doesn't give way before your back. Hyper extensions are great if you have access to the equipment. And good mornings are great.

-I'd start w/ hyperextensions,as you get stronger add 25lb plate across your chest
    - try some good mornings( again work up in weight as you get stronger) find a video on these as there are several variations-rounded back, arched back, straight back. These can be dangerous so be careful.
    - probably the holy grail of LB exercise ...the deadlift ( again good form is mustor you might be posting on the injury/ recuperation threads)

The best bet is to just START squatting and deadlifting. Take it easy on the weights initially until your form is decent. On squats all you need to remember is keep your back straight through the exercise, don't lean forwards, and squat low. On deadlifts DON'T round your back at all through the exercise and let the bar pass close close to your knees (if not touch your knees). You could use a belt on the heavy sets of both of these exercises.

thanks... i will just practice, with an empty barbell, or at least 10's on it.. to practice my form. And i am going to invest in a lifting belt.

If you learn proper technique the risks of back injury are relatively minor. Go light and go deep and you'll be fine. Squatting form is more foot placement and depth. Dead Lift form is learning how to use your body like a lever to pick up retarded amounts of weight.
    Current Supplements:
    ON 100% Whey: Extreme Chocolate
    GNC P(ricetag)ro Performance Creatine Monohydrate
GNC Fish Body Oils 1000mg (deodorized)
    Universal Animal Pak
    Universal Animal Cuts
    Universal Animal Stak
Lots of Tuna in Spring Water

Still small, just not as strong as I used to be.
