There are no real world contraindications for a cric. Obviously less intrusive airways are always preferred and text books will list tracheal transections, laryngeal fractures, etc.. as absolute contraindications. But if you can’t get an airway by traditional methods you will be forced to do a surgical airway at some point regardless of the situation.
Its one of those things where real world treatment is superior to text book treatment. You try to find me a doctor that will sit there and let his patient die because of a laryngeal fracture instead of taking the risk and going through with the cricothyrotomy.-BMBC underground-

Got it. I had been wondering if there was ever a reason NOT to do a cric, but since its the last resort it makes sense that there wouldnt be any reason not to do it.
Just trying to get ahead of the curve here before we start our cric labs/lectures. As always you have been a great help.

Actually, for the first time, yes. All the other levels at the hospital are full of old saggy nurses, but we were in the ED tonight and there were like 5 techs/nurses that i would crush. Looking forward to going back there to stalk them in a couple weeks.
Otherwise school is great, and im not just saying that. For the first time in my life im interested in the subject matter. Pretty important to me. It moves quickly but i think thats a good thing. Every day im learning something new. My grades are all A's so far, have midterms this week and i feel very well equipped to destroy them. I mentioned before that we start our ECG class this week so im a little anxious, but im sure ill be fine.
The only thing i havent liked so far is the goddamn med math. Its not difficult but boy do i hate numbers. All those conversions are a pain in the ass.

Youre speaking my language man, I hate math and love hot nurses/techs! haha
All the drug calcs are a pain in the ass. Luckily, the more you actually use them you can memorize most of your dosages and conversions. Glad to hear that everything is going good man. Good luck with your mid-terms.-BMBC underground-

Didn't get in the Feb. class, so looks like August for me, that is alright with me because I am getting some construction experience, working on speaking different languages, and I am going to try improve my swimming so I can get a lifeguard cert, take a welding class, etc.
January is right around the corner if you get in, there are some things you can control right now..start reading your Essentials and making note cards, work on your rope and knots with gloves, and your conditioning, of course your EMT, these were most people get dropped from the academy

Just from experience man, ive been a Paramedic for the last few years and started working as an EMT at 18. I applied to quite a few departments when I was an EMT and got put on waiting lists, but im not sure if I want to go that route as a Medic and get stuck on an ambulance or squad for the rest of my career.
Im kicking around a few different ideas right now for possible career choices or even going back to school.
Nice bro, I liked my ECG classes a lot. Wait until you get into the more complex stuff, it starts getting even more interesting.-BMBC underground-

Right on maing. The way our program works is that we take this course as Intermediate's, which teaches us 3-leads, and during our final Paramedic semester we do 12-leads. This semester i think we are only required to learn 32 rythms.
Reviewed some basic heart A&P and learned about the different waves, intervals, and segments tonight. It kinda seems like putting together a puzzle, which im into.

Im sure some guys do fail on purpose, lol. I guess thats the only downside to becoming a Paramedic with aspirations to become a firefighter. It definitely increases your chances of getting hired, but youre stuck on a rescue or squad in most cases. Ive thought about applying to some depts that run medics on their engines, but those are few and far between.

They maybe few and far between where your at. But here in Colorado Pretty much ever dept I know of runs medics on the engines. Or just find an all medic dept. Like Aurora fire (require medic in 4 years of hire) Or Denver fire who does not staff medics. (Be a medic working as a Basic)

Not that bad in LACo Fire, the medics rotate every 3rd shift on the squad, correct?
On rare occasions, the guys on the squad make a grab at a first due fire
I hear you though, depending on what part of LACo, being on the squad would suck
Do you know if they are strict on the height-weight policy? Because I am like 50 pounds overweight according to that scale

We got to play around with the IO's before our midterm today. Used chicken legs as well as pediatric dummies for practice. We didnt get to use any of the "EZ-IO" type devices since the National Registry exam requires that we do it the ol' fashioned way.
I gotta say, those little dummies are a bit creepy.

Had the flashover chamber tonight, it was awesome brahs. Like nothing I've ever experienced before. Flashed about 7 times while we were in there. It was seriously the coolest thing I've ever done.

Yea LACo runs the kelly schedule.
I've heard that they are also pretty strict on their selection process, they get so many applicants that they can afford to be. That chart is somewhat skewed though, say you are 5'10 - 220 and in great shape the chart wont be as heavily weighted. Applicants are required to have a current CPAT so that weeds out a lot of the out of shape candidates.
They are definitely few and far between out here. Most departments out here run all EMT's or run their Medics on squads and rescues.
Whats up man?? Hows everything going?-BMBC underground-

this is such bull****, at first they said we need a 70% to pass the class. then they said we needed an 80%. and now we just took our midterm and all the sudden its required we need a 85% to pass the midterm. WHAT THE ****, can he even do that? and what makes it worse is i got a goddamn 84% and he said everyone that didn't get a 85% or better has got to take the retest and get a 80% or better. but everyone knows retest are harder because he doesn't throw any questions out. fml fml fml fml
