Just got back from a tour to NZ. Seriously the rugby culture is so differant to the Australian rugby culture. The rugby club I saw whilst on the bus to the dorms had 8 feilds!
Played blindside flanker for most of the tour and had a run at openside but I think i'm more suited to the blindside roles rather than the openside with the gamespeed increasing and all the new laws.

I am assuming HS? Keep working man, nothing will impress the coach more than a hard worker.
Broke my ankle and did it numerous times. My advice would be to never let it hold you back and to use it as motivation. Do everything you can without risking injury to make yourself better. Overall advice would be to impress your coach at every chance you can. Be the 1st in all the drills, be a leader to underclassmen, beat the drills (don't do them to get by), come early and leave late. I couldn't stress enough how much better of a team we became when the seniors stepped up vocally and took initiative as leaders.

Yeah they outplayed the highlanders hard,
Our team went down 16-10 to the home side as well at the curtain raiser, we were 16-0 down 50minutes in when we finally decided to start playing rugby,
Biggest drawback was 2-3 guys way to unfit, 2 looseforwards were walking and lagging behind bigtime which really threw my game,
Because I had to commit to alot more rucks and couldn't play my normal running game off the first five/halfback. Feel like ive been through a blender today, pretty physical game***PMC - Where Amazing Happens***

I went to this football combine this morning and there were about 20 linebackers that were mostly sophmores and Im a freshman. We tested our vertical and I got the highest out of all the lbers at 30 inches. Then, we ran 40s and I got a 5.1 twice in a row (laser timed). Then one lber got a 4.5 40 and a bunch of guys were getting 4.7 and 4.8s. I was one of the slowest in the 40 but I had the best vertical. I thought they correlate? What areas do I need to improve on?
Plus, just about every kid used a football/track stance or smting they made up for there 40s and I have the defranco combine DVD and have been practicing the stance for weeks and have gotten pretty good at the technical part of the 40.Last edited by dolphinsfan270; 04-11-2010 at 04:51 PM.

is that your clubs ground, looked like an awesum place to play rugby..... i see it isnt although playing in that heat must be hard. i think ive had two games this year in what i would call warm weather and the difference in fitness levels was noticable, duno if id like playing in the warm weather all the time.
well thats my season finished now and my team got religated what a crap feeling, we where religated ages ago but only mathmaticaly on saturday. personally i though i had a good season, ive been alot fitter and stronger this year got about 10 80min games which is big improvement for me as over the last few years the longest ive been getting is around 70mins and that would be with a break at somepoint and i duno how you other guys feel and if it makes a difference but 80mins in the front row/front five is a shift and i allways feel dead after games. i think doing an actuall full pre-season for the first time in 5years helped alot aswell. now i just need to decide what i wana do with next season, what level i wana play at if i wana get fitter or bigger don't think actual strength is that much of a problem but i'm defo gona enjoy and take a long off season.people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"
if your family was captured and you were told you needed to put 100 pounds onto your max squat within two months or your family would be executed, would you squat once per week? Something tells me that you'd start squatting every day

First round started on the weekend. Unfortunately we lost, but I scored an awesome try on full time. Got a ball of the 5/8 at about the 22, cut inside him and went through about 5 players (took a couple over the line). So that rules me out of the nudie run end of season haha.

They do correlate and that is pretty rare to see the highest vertical score the lowest 40. I would say you just need to get out and start sprinting more often. I don't know much about your lifting stats, but from the sounds of it you seem like you are a powerful guy (probably can squat a lot). You most likely are a strength jumper rather than an elastic jumper. Elastic jumpers (those who can barely squat their weight, but have 30 inch verts) usually show more of the correlation between vert and 40 than strength jumpers do.

Ijust started lifting a lot recently and got a home gym set up, and now my 14 yr old son wants me to help him get a weight lifting program started. His primary focus is on helping him in sports--basketball and football.
I'm thinking of having him do a program like this.
Stength: similar to Rippetoes: squats, bench, rows, deadlifts 3 sets of 5 each
Plyo: set up a plyometrics workout box jumps, squat jumps, lunge jumps, dynamic pushups. Or maybe bag the dynamic pushups and do bench press again like in the strength workout and then go to Plyometrics for legs.
And alternate workouts with one day of rest between. Mon: strength, Tue: rest, Wed: plyo, Th: rest, Fri: strength, Sat: rest, Sun: plyo, etc.
What do you think of this?

I think your kid is going to be a stud! lol...
No, it looks good though...It's hard to prescribe to a kid without knowing anything about them. As I am sure you are aware of, some kids have facial hair by age 12, some don't get it until their 20. Basically what I am saying is if your kid has the maturity level that Greg Oden had when he was 14 he could train like an older athlete...if he's rail thin and is in extremely early stages of puberty I would be careful.
That being said...Rippetoes is fine, but you NEED to be there supervising him with any multi-joint exercise i.e. (clean, jerk, etc). I think you have a good mix of strength and plyo exercises there but just be sure he is getting adequate rest. You're giving him days off which is good, but if he suffers from muscle soreness early on don't be hesitant to give him two days off in a row...sometimes that works better for young athletes.
Enough with my rambling...Just supervise and teach proper form with light weight or even a broom stick...
BOL...hope this helps!!3K+ ~Misc Jumpers Crew~

I've got a couple of questions.
1. What does it mean to 'seal' someone in the post? I've only ever played rec/street ball and I'm not acquainted with the term. Any time I'd have a mismatch I'd take advantage of it by getting deep post position and the guard would stand at the 3 pt line asking me seal to my man.
Very confused... I've got my man pretty much pinned under the rim and here's the funny part, he only passes when I lose position resulting in a turnover.
2. I'm weaker and much slower than usual, not sure what it is but I didn't even work out for much of last week. My reaction time was slower, people were beating me off the dribble left and right, and moving me in the post with relative ease. Now I know I'm 168 lbs but compared to say a week ago playing with this very same cast, I don't get what's changed.
It's like their pushing and I can't push back as hard as I try. When I think about it, I'm trying but it's like my body is giving out on me.
3. Last question, how would I defend against screens? Not pick and rolls but when another player is trying to free up and having one of their teammates screen me off. I got burnt all game by this.
Thanks in advance.Last edited by FryDude; 04-12-2010 at 12:55 PM.
