Sure they do, go to Lubys, McDonald's and KFC and you will be getting your food from the "chef" or close to it without having to tip.

In most places, servers tip out a percentage to the bussers and the bar. Sometimes even the kitchen in smaller restaurants.

Im not an idiot businesses arent charities. Everyone trying to make money will charge the most they can get away with. The fact that restaurants are legally allowed to pay their staff below minimum wage just shows you how the American government is owned and controlled by corporations.

Plenty of options there too. Either cook it yourself or hire a personal chef. There are a ton for hire and you won't have to pay a waiter to bring you the food.

Would you be cool going to a restaurant where random people go to the kitchen where YOUR FOOD is being prepared so they can grab their food? I'm sure the health inspector would love that

Where in any of this conversation have I used the term sky rocket? They will go up commiserate with the pay. And trust me when I say some professional waiters make over 6 figures easily in a nice restaurant.

it's either you know how to do your job, or you don't. if a server has year of experience and is very quick to get customers in and out...give them a raise.

if you don't have enough customers to pay your employees a fair wage and charge more for the food instead, your restaurant sucks and you need to find a new business venture. your restaurant should be full most hours of operation.

Doesn't it show how the American government has less control over certain businesses? There shouldn't even be a minimum wage law. Any wage rate is willingly agreed upon by the employer and employee.

When I was a waiter in college I preferred to have an incentivized pay structure just as when I worked in sales for the corp world. I preferred to have a highly leveraged comp plan. Basically, don't pay me schiet if I don't deliver but reward me handsomely when I knock it out of the park.

it's either you know how to do your job, or you don't. if a server has year of experience and is very quick to get customers in and out...give them a raise.

if you don't have enough customers to pay your employees a fair wage and charge more for the food instead, your restaurant sucks and you need to find a new business venture. your restaurant should be full most hours of operation.
What is your opinion of a professional and courteous? That's all relative....right?
Let's say I order an $80 ribeye, Not cheap but not to crazy like some rare wagyu......If I ask the waiter what wine I should pair it with, the standard answer would be any kind of red wine. But let's say another waiter took the initiative to really study the restaurant's wine, and understood more intricately exactly which red to pair with the ribeye, and thus it makes my meal much better. I'm happy to tip the waiter extra. That's going above and beyond.

Waiters working in nice restaurants aren't really what most of these people are worried about either. The people in this thread complaining are not going to those super high end restaurants. Nor do I believe those waiters are getting paid below minimum wage to start with. I also don't believe personally they should be getting paid that much in the first place, but thats a separate discussion.

lmao @ "waiters only make $2-3/hr in wages and bypass federal min wage law"

if you are dumb enough to believe this, you deserve to be sterilized.

NO worker can be paid less than min wage period. sure their wages are $2-3 per hour, but if they dont make enough in tips to reach an equivalent min wage, they are paid the difference. They will always make at-least min wage.

I'm saying, I'll gladly pay 20% to keep people that shouldn't be in the kitchen near my food out of the kitchen based on your solution of letting the patrons get their own food. Don't turn this on me, you are e one that came up with the asinine suggestion.

If you are salty about paying 4x the cost, then stay home? Problem solved.

as a restaurant manager it is your responsibility to lay out the responsibilities for the wait staff. it is your job to make sure everyone knows how to make the drinks, etc. etc.

hire qualified people with good references, and train your new employees well. and test them.

if a restaurant requires knowing how to pair wines, you need to make sure your staff knows how to do that.

The whole percentage thing is somewhat strange. A meal for 4 at a dine in restaurant here can be say 58 after tax, yet going to a restaurant that has 30+ dollar plates with 2 people would put a person at 60 before tax.. The meal for 4 obviously required more effort and work by the server, than the 30+ dollar plates for 2 people. I think tipping should be subjective. If I'm doing well and happy, then why not. I wouldn't do it because I'm expected. I'm doing it to help them out, hopefully they're thankful and it's good to help knowing they appreciate your generosity.

Expecting something such as tip is the way of saying I deserve handouts or am entitled. Restaurant owners can afford to pay their servers 10 an hour, if need be. If they have to raise their food prices or whatever, less customers will come in. The owner should and will remain keeping his food at the same price. Nobody is asking you to settle for such a job. If you're dependent on others generosity or feel like you should be given, that's wrong. I think people who don't tip would gladly pick up their food from the counter themselves when it's ready (after they pay).

I remember some waitress cried after she 100% messed up our payment. Said heres the 50 cash put that towards the bill after swiping the cards, she ended up charging less than half on the card and didn't bring back change. She 100% goofed. Cried after we walked out + my friend walked back in to tip her. She felt entitled. You didn't get a tip because you seriously messed up + costed me/my friends a hassle with sorting things out. The whole point of charging cards first and remainder in cash was because the remainder of cash would have been a tip but since she messed up, there was no cash left and it really messed up things with sorting it out amongst friends. Some guys paid way too little on card and all they had was card while the guys who threw in cash ended up paying majority.

Some delivery guy recently brought food to my work, mind you I work part time and I don't get paid the most. Puts my food down, I give him the money for the food and says "eh so no tip" then I was like I'll give you tip obviously. I pull out my wallet and by the time I look up the old man was gone. You drove less than .5 miles and charged me 3.50 for delivering the order already, if I feel the need to tip you, I will. Don't ask for it like it's a handout or you're entitled to it just because that's what YOU rely on.
