In a recent chat with Sky News for ’12 Years a Slave,’ Steve McQueen criticized Hollywood for avoiding slavery as a subject matter for movies. The acclaimed filmmaker/artist said that he hopes his drama will “redress that balance”. McQueen said, “The Second World War lasted five years and there are hundreds and hundreds of films about the Second World War and the Holocaust. Slavery lasted 400 years and there are less than 20 [films]. We have to redress that balance and look at that time in history.” The Turner Prize-winning artist, who previously directed ‘Hunger’ and ‘Shame,’ said: “People somehow do not want to look at this particular time in history.”

For a reason, they're ****ing boring. You can only do so much on slavery, it's just the same **** over and over. These people are in the entertainment business, they make money off of producing stuff that people want to watch, not what they 'should' show people. People want to be entertained, not have a lesson in righteousness.

Considerding every single ethnic backround to ever exist on planet earth has been enslaved at some point I dont get why people act like black americans are the only people to ever suffer this atrocity. Theres slavery in this world today, as we speek, I dont see many people clamoring on their behalf for hollywood to address them.
What about more movies on the slaughter of native americans which is probably more of an atrocity. Or how about how the african american population has had a big hand in destroying american cities.
Waa waa waa theres too much fuked up chit in this world to make big screen dramas about them all.Certified 1200 ng/l T

does he realize how campy films about slavery would have been in the 1950's? They would be horrendously bad and considered wildly insensitive now, even if they had good intentions. He should be happy there are fewer films. We are now at a point where films can represent historical events in a way that isn't hyper-realized and melodramatic.
Also, there are significantly fewer movies set during Revolutionary war times than there are films made about WWII. Does this decry any sort of foul play? There might be a lot of WWII movies, but there are a significant number less about the holocaust itself. What stories do you want to tell about slavery? What kind of stories do you want to tell about the holocaust? Most people want to see stories of hope. That's why Schindler's List, Life is Beautiful, Amistad, and Roots were popular. Most people don't want to see films that remind them of the harsh realities of past human behavior without and sort of level of vindication. Most movies don't have a serial killer that gets away. Most movies don't star a guy who shoots up a bus full of elementary school students.
I liked the movie though, and he is a great directorLast edited by Bongos; 01-06-2014 at 09:24 AM.

Comparing American slavery to WW2 is fuking retarded. WW2 is the largest event to happen to human history, with many people still alive who lived through it and their stories are still being told.
Slavery didn't affect nearly as many people and all of those people are dead. He's a fuking hypocrite, ignoring all of the other slavery in the world that goes on right now including in the US. Fuk that nikka.Home Gym Crew
