    lat pulldown machine substitute?

    i remember reading that u can do lat pulldowns w/out a machine. it was something like u lay on ur back with dumbells your arms outstretched, and pulldown until it reaches ur chin. is that right? thanks.

    laying on your back with dumbells and pulling them down to you isnt going to be hard at all since they normally would go that way without pulling. (gravity). If you do want to substitute lat pulldowns, pullups are what you need. they do require a good deal of stregnth, so if you cant do them have someone help by lifting your legs. good luck.

    You can also do rows and pullovers to strengthen the lats to the point where you can do chins. It's not perfect but it'l help.

    When did pullups become a substitution for the lat pulldown? Shouldn't it be the other way around? If you're not strong enough to do pullups, do lat pulldowns. If you are, get off the pulldown machine!

    I agree 9cyclops9. If your gym has a Pull-Up assist, i'd recommend that. before going back to the lat Pull-Down

    yea im pretty sure pulldowns are a substitute for pullups lol. if you dont have the machine, put your feet on a chair to assist a bit when it gets harder near the end of the set. or you could have a friend help you get up and let you do the negative.
