    Sicko

So I just watched this documentary by Michael Moore, and I have to say as all his films do; it really opened my eyes. Very informative. Have any of you seen it, and what did you think? I was really surprised by some of the information.

While I do agree with some of his opinions, you should take his information with a grain of salt. He tends to be a bit self serving.

Ehh, it was fairly informative, but like most of Moore's films, it was very one sided, and the stupid masses don't see that, and believe everything he says. Just take it with a grain of salt.

EDIT - ^^^ beat me to it.

I do understand what you are getting at I truly don't think anything is false. It is a documentary, everything would be fact. I do on the other hand agree it is entirely one-sided, but he is trying to prove a point. It wouldn't make sense for him to give arguments against his point.

It's about the negative effects of privatization on the American Health Care systems, and the negative aspects that buying insurance from HMOs can arise. Oh, and how every other country in the world is better. I lived in Europe (born there), now am in Canada (live here), and lived in England (for a couple years), and all have their strengths/weaknesses.

I can't watch is work because it is one-sided to the point where I get furious. There is plenty of good information in them, but he is by no means showing you the whole picture. There is a reason why wealthy people living in Europe/Canada will come to America when they need serious medical attention.

Well, true, but it would give the documentary more validity - for instance, when writing research papers, one should provide a counter-argument, and then deconstruct it and show how it is weak, thus making your point stronger... again, not sure if that is applicable to a film documentary, but it works well enough in papers.

That's not really relevant is it for most people. America probably does have the best doctors, certainly in particular areas. But it's about wider healthcare isn't it.

I'm British, I haven't seen the film, but from the reaction over here he makes way too much of the British health system, it's free but it fails a lot in terms of waiting lists etc. Michael Moore is usually on the right track but he has dubious ways of getting there.

Yes, because right now you're not paying for the uninsured who can't pay their bills anyway [/sarcasm]. Either through taxes (Medicaid) or your insurance- who gets billed more by hospitals and physicians to cover the delinquent cases who can't pay. So why the he|| do we have middle men insurance and drug companies taking a cut out of a necessary good? Does that seem like the most efficient, cost effective, and most humane way to administer healthcare to a country? Regardless of what you think of socialized medicine, you really can't defend our current healthcare system- it's corrupt and broken.

People go to Jordan for cheap breast implants, they also go to China for embryonic stem-cell treatments. Also this not true about Canadians on "quality," it's actually the opposite as they are more satisfied with the care provided than US citizens. Same with the waiting times.

Often the argument in favor of American health-care is waiting lists, and quality. But the fact is not every doctor in America is a great doctor. Like any other medical system there are degrees of quality in hospitals. In my specific region in Canada it works with a lettering system. A, B, and C; A being the best, and C being the worst. I agree the best doctors in America are better than the best in other nations, due to the amazing education facilities in America (Harvard, etc.). However; on an average I don't think that is true. And the waits are truly not that bad up here, at least from my experiences. I hear people complain after waiting an hour or two, but I'd much rather wait two hours than get thrown out on the street for not having insurance. I did a bit of research, and at 18 years old the amount of medical attention I have received - that I can recall - would have cost me over $50,000 US. I have suffered several broken bones, ligament damage, etc. The only compromise here is picking and choosing when you need higher quality medical attention. When getting surgery I go to a major hospital. When I only need a prescription for penicillin, or something of that nature I go to a lesser degree facility.

    Thumbs down

He's never produced a "Documentary" in his life - those need to be fact based, without bias or deception.

At least I'll give him credit: He does a phenomenal job of twisting things to meet his own agenda, and anything that's a flat-out lie is carefully crafted so the blame can be placed on someone else.

There would never be any controversy over this movie if Michael Moore hadn't made a movie about about George Bush. Moore does not make "documentaries." -- He makes movies about important topics, that are intended to be provocative.

I actually got neg'd for this thread. I find it kind of sad some people are so consumed in their government's propaganda they can't for a second think maybe something is wrong with their nation. Do some reading. Bush just vito'd children's healthcare, because middle to upper class society does not benefit from it. Poor kids don't need medical attention too?

So why the he|| do we have middle men insurance and drug companies taking a cut out of a necessary good? Does that seem like the most efficient, cost effective, and most humane way to administer healthcare to a country? Regardless of what you think of socialized medicine, you really can't defend our current healthcare system- it's corrupt and broken.
Because the government run VA hospitals, medicaid/medicare insurances are far more broken and inefficient than private insurance. The way we treat veterans in VA hospitals is an utter disgrace and that very system is the exact system healthcare would be modeled after. The government is "privatized" as well.....there are formularies (lists of meds you can use) and can not go off formulary. I don't practice medicine in VA's, I practice flow-sheets

Giving complete authority over your health to the government is pretty much a perfect way to make sure you are treated most efficiently (aka cheapest) and not necessarily appropriately.....what do i know tho ((shrug))

i agree, we need free universal healthcare those HMOs take all our money and dont give any of it back in terms of people actually getting the healthcare they deserve, freaking people in CUBA have longer lives then us.
America has never been united by blood or birth or soil. We are bound by ideals that move us beyond our backgrounds, lift us above our interests and teach us what it means to be citizens.
