    L-Carnitine doesn't work...says Mens Health

I've been using Acetyl L-carnitine for awhile now 1.2g in the morning and 1.2g postworkout, I get these emails from mens health with daily health notes and etc, however this one caught my attention:

    http://www.menshealth.com/cda/articl...3cd____&page=2

    http://www.menshealth.com/cda/articl...st_Supplements

    L-Carnitine
Supplements that feature this amino acid promise weight loss and improved energy.

Reality check: Although some research does confirm its benefits for fat oxidation, there are just too many studies out there showing it does not work. An Australian study published in 2000 showed that taking 2 g of L-carnitine twice daily for 8 weeks did not alter fat mass or total body mass in overweight women. A Swiss study showed that L-carnitine had no effect on metabolism and didn't improve exercise performance. A study published in Sports Medicine concluded simply that there is no scientific basis to recommend L-carnitine supplements to improve exercise performance.

    L-carnitine
    Fat Melter?
Initially, it seemed that this amino acid could fill in for honest exercise by burning fat and increasing athletic performance. So far, research has disproven all the hype.

I for one believe L-Carnitine is a great supplement aid in losing weight. I do believe it has to be taken in high doses and cycled. It goes w/out saying that your diet has to be in check.

Remember theres always gonna be studies out there that proves or disproves something. You gotta go w/ what you feel works for you.

i've heard and read too many good things about it
its like M&F saying creatine doesnt work

what about the test boosting effects of carnitine?...and how were those studies administered?...they make it seem like they had 2000 fat women and they did nothing but take carnitine...they dont really answer any of those questions

...guess i wont be buying any mens health mags anytime soon

    study on overweight women

That study doesn't mention whether the women exercised did it? Even the L-carnitine sold at CVS says it will improve fat utilization for EXERCISE. It doesn't say it will burn fat while watching TV. If the study didn't test overweight women exercising alone vs. overweight women exercising with L-carnitine, it was a bogus study.

I like how they don't discuss any benefit other than a few negative weight loss studies. It comes off like L-Carnitine (which is not an amino acid although it is derived from them) has zero benefits and research behind it even though it's an FDA approved drug and has a massive amount of research in various forms no doubt. ALC, PLC, etc.

I've read good things and heard good anecdotal stuff about L-carnitine, but I'm still not convinced, especially as concerns weight loss. Given its high cost relative to other free form aminos and metabolites, I'm personally waiting on it for now. It's good how people here are skeptical of those ****ty magazine blurbs about this and that, but I also think people here tend to be way too defensive of and accepting of most supplements, except where brand biases come into play.
