This is all despite the fact that 10,000 steps is a completely arbitrary figure, one that originates from a successful Japanese marketing campaign in the mid-60s. In an attempt to capitalise on the immense popularity of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the company Yamasa designed the world’s first wearable step-counter, a device called a manpo-kei, which translates as “10,000-step meter”.
“There wasn’t really any evidence for it at the time,” says Prof David Bassett, head of kinesiology, recreation and sport studies at the University of Tennessee. “They just felt that was a number that was indicative of an active lifestyle and should be healthy.”
A research team at Kyushu University of Health and Welfare began to investigate the potential benefits of taking 10,000 steps. They concluded that the average Japanese person took between 3,500 and 5,000 steps a day, and that if these people increased their daily step count to 10,000, they could decrease their risk of coronary artery disease.

If you actually care about your health, or are serious about your physique, tracking steps is quite helpful. It helps to maintain a consistent level of activity, especially when trying to cut.
For example, you might be going to the gym and hitting x amount of hard cardio and wondering why you're not losing weight. It's because you take 5,000 steps while you're in the gym but then get 1,000 steps over the course of the rest of the day because you work a desk job or you're just a lazy piece of ****..:MiscMarioBrahs:.

I'm not saying you have to make a game of it or even mention it to another human soul. What I am saying is that it is helpful data when cutting. Another example, you didn't drop the weight you were expecting to this week and everything else was on point. You check your device and see that for the past week you've walked 1-2000 less steps per day on average. So instead of wondering or cutting calories prematurely, you can just bring your activity level up to baseline.

Phones are not accurate even slightly so I wouldn't even bother looking at your phone and actually thinking you took that many steps.
I used to count when I worked at Costco cause I'd do 30k+ steps daily and there was a step competition there that I always cleaned house on.
I don't work on my feet anymore so I don't count them really even tho my smart watch usually is anywaysSometimes I park in handicap spaces, while handicap people make handicap faces

My watch says I spend an average of 18 hours standing per day, not even on work days, it seems to count sitting as standing or something.
Short cuts to success are often paved with lies.

Walking has always been just normal daily activity for me and it’s weird that when I just literally walk people say “you’re exercising”. I never think a normal daily activity as exercise. Is washing dishes exercise too? It’s so bizarre.
That said walking is amazing in every level, and if someone has been sedentary and starts walking every day, then yeah it would be exercise for them.

Fats and idiots ITT
Step tracking is good, and until you do it you likely arent as active as you think you are. Also, if you are fat or oldcel then it's a nice way to go from zero to actual baseline activity. Sure 10k is arbitrary number, but since most Americans hardly move at all it's a reasonable goal to stay active
Of course if you are a gym rat you dont need to do it. I do it just as a baseline though to help make sure Im moving enough

I'm a smart watch advocate. The step counting is a nice bonus, but it's not the main reason I use them. Main reason is if I'm in the middle of doing something and the phone buzzes, I can see who's calling/texting, including if my phone was temporarily misplaced or inconveniently far away.
That said, steps is still a good feature in general for if you're on a cut or just trying to keep lean. If you find yourself at 10k steps a day, AND you work out, AND you eat at a deficit, you'll shred quickly. There's some days where you think you're being healthy and fit, then realize you were actually mostly stagnant at 3k-5k steps, it can be a bit of a reality check and cause you to walk more and eat less the next day.i7-14700k

This is what I'm saying. Is walking a great, healthy thing to do? Absolutely. But the idea of calling it "exercising" is ridiculous unless you're like 70+ years old and struggle to walk in general.
I don't even care if people want to track their steps for personal reasons. But when they talk about it, that's some Goober Central chit, srs
