The Ukraine war is the next Afghanistan/Iraq/Vietnam for the U.S., mark my words

Mark my words, that Ukraine war won't be over within the next 5 years, and by then, we'll be staring down the barrel of another 10+ year conflict.

Russia is clearly prepared and satisfied enough with this being a long, drawn out process. The ONLY thing that MIGHT end it sooner is if Trump got into office and demanded a peace deal be reached (including demanding Zelensky legitimately negotiate for peace, not just Russia/Putin), but even then I'm skeptical. All bets are off if "The Big Guy" wins again, but we're probably screwed either way.

The Soviet-Afghan war was crazy for Russia, it really helped to collapse the UUSR. It was the straw that broke the camel's back economically. They've lost three times as much in 1.5 years in Ukraine than a decade in Afghanistan.

Assuming Russia foolishly tries to take all of Ukraine. I suspect they are happy with what they have now and simply want regime change in Kiev. We are the ones likely to escalate this to something terrible if Ukraine starts losing severely.

OP, care to name any "deals" that Putin has lived up to? The problem with dictators is that they are the rule of law. The only rule of law in Russia is what Putin says it is. The Germans and other European countries found out rather rudely that Putin doesn't hold up contracts, he uses them as leverage to get when he wants. So a "Peace Deal" between Russia and Ukraine would be a temporary joke. On the other hand, Dictators and Dictator wannabe's are really good at telling you what their plans are. Read Putin's speeches, it's pretty clear he wants to rebuild the Soviet/Russian empire with his neighboring states being fully under his control and their people to be used as cannon fodder for the greater glory of the Motherland. He believes that Russian Greatness demands that Russia be given a sphere of influence that it and only it has a say in running. Not so good if you're one of Russians neighbors, most of whom are NATO and EU countries. So, give the Ukrainians the arms they want in mass quantities or get ready to send troops when the war spreads to NATO. Hint: it's less expensive to ship supplies to the Ukrainians.
