because although kids always traveled to better neighborhoods on Halloween thus some neighborhoods would be packed, you still had a steady stream of kids coming through less-rich neighborhoods. prol similar to how you simply see less kids playing it the street, although you might see them in a cul-de-sac neighborhood. still rare.

1) the internet/gaming changed gave them something else to do

2) information overload amplified the likelihood of something bad happening (bad candy, robbed, etc.)

3) parents working more

4) just general disinterest by kids cuz maybe kids don't hang out in groups by neighborhood anymore and more to do with social affiliations/church

I will admit I remember houses being a lot more decorated for sure. Back when I trick or treated the good houses would have things like fog machines and strobe lights going with creepy music playing and all kinds of effects. I rarely see houses that intense these days.


It's the same for Christmas.


I actually think people have less time to do these things. Everyone is constantly pressed to do stuff at rapid speed. Every work place has terrible work life balance and thanks to technology work never really leaves you at the end of the day. Even more so now that remote work is a common thing. It's all out of whack. The lack of Halloween interest and trick or treating isn't even on the kids imo. It all starts with the adults and the adults don't have time to encourage and/or excite kids to participate in this stuff these days.

I feel like there's no mystery or creativity anymore and people feel like they've already seen it all. Think about how when you were a kid, it was fun to walk around during Halloween and see people go all-out with crazy/creative costumes. Nowadays, all this stuff is available on or has already gone viral on social media, so there's less incentive to go out and explore. You'll even get step-by-step instructions on how to do it if you really want to emulate it next year. Same thing with Christmas lights/decorations during December.

Couple that with the fact that we've seemingly run out of ideas on anything now (just look at Hollywood/music as evidence of that), declining birth rates, lack of social trust, and this is what you get.
