Why is my bench so weak compared to OHP?

My OHP is 135x5 with a 1RM of 145 (probably can hit 150 next week). But my bench is 185x5. I can DB Press 85s. Shouldn’t I be able to bench more?

I haven’t actually done any of the big lifts consistently until a month ago though. In the past month my OHP up 30 and bench up 50. But still feel like my bench is super weak.

So why would you be able to bench more?

And what does your OHP have to do with your bench? very little in common, tricep volume and hypertrophy is probably all that crosses over

Is 185 an acceptable number at this stage? I haven’t done big lifts until now but have been lifting somewhat consistently for 2 years. Probably thought I’d be able to do more.

how much weight have you gained in 2 years? how much effort do you put in improving bench technique?

Long story short (I posted the long version in the programming forum), I was fat at 220ish 2-3 years ago, I dropped to 165, and am now 195 aiming for 205 end of my bulk.

In my first two years I never benched only did db presses. Thought I was doing alright doing 85x8. When I started benching a month ago I thought I’d have a stronger bench.

Well there we go. You've been benching a month... benching is still a skill as much as a raw strength test you just need to get better and more consistent at it and bench more 4-6x (including close variations, close grip, floor press, spoto, longer pauses, pin bench) a week in 4-5 days is my recommendation

Both are weak. Ratio is irrelevant

Are you strictly pressing 135 for reps or are you using a lot push?

Strict. Just interesting to me because from what I see guys who OHP 135 can bench 225 easy. And it’s not like I trained anything substantially more than my chest prior to this month. But I suppose it’s true I haven’t done any of these lifts prior so guess I’ll wait and see.

Most balanced people run somewhere, give or take, averages and bell curve and outliers and all that applies, a strict Press around about 67% or so of their bench press. That would in theory match a 135 lb press up to a ~201 lb bench.

The average might be even higher than 67% among balanced trainees who have progressed enough to where ratios can be considered, which would make a 135 lb press match up a below-200 lb bench.

Interesting. Fair enough. I suppose most guys do typically prioritize bench too.

give bench priority your bench goes up, you wont get dramatically strong in a lift that you dont train on regular basis
