It is a little different at 50 plus. I like to keep my carbs clean and increase them slowly because too much too soon just leads to fat that is harder to get off than it use to be. Same thing with the weights small increases at a time with lots of warm up. It can be done it just takes more time and effort than it did at 20.
If you're gonna to talk the talk, you've got walk the walk!! Woooooo!!!

Ill tell you what I personally do ....nobody can really tell you what to do on a forum without knowing your current ability and current diet/routine and so on.
I try to eat 5 meals , each with 40-50 grams of protein, then take in a protein shake before bed...another 30-50 grams.
I try to eat carbs every 3 hours or so to avoid getting really hungry during the day....
just eat lots of eggs, chicken, veggies, some grains, oats and things of that nature.
I like fish or red meat too.
I drink milk, eat cheese, nuts...peanut butter...things like that for snacks
lift heavy and train hard for about an hour 4 days a week.
Works for me. My strength is better than ever."A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

For me, They aren't "least satiating" at all, blood sugar controls hunger.
Again, it works for me. Might not be for everyone. I prefer have some oatmeal with my eggs, fruit with my next meal, then potato or rice at lunch, then another piece of fruit with my second lunch, then salad and rice at dinner. With a "bulk" the carbs help spare the proteins.
For those on a very low carb diet, more fat does the trick.Last edited by coachcalande; 03-11-2016 at 09:03 AM.

You think Id have to compete at 150 lbs?
Wow. No thanks. I actually looked really good at 238 lbs for a few years back in my 30s.
I think Im somewhere around 307 right now, that video is maybe a year old and Im doing really well with muscle mass and strength right now (after taking most of football season off) - its fun.
I like to eat, I have never used any kind of steroids or hormones - I train for AND EAT FOR strength and big muscles, not for an illusion. Just different goals.
the question was "how do you bulk at 50?" so I told him what I do. Obviously I need more calories than he would need at his weight."A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. Not trying to offend you, coach. Just discussing some goal differences here.
Looking good and being stage ready for a natural bodybuilding contest are two completely different things. Have you ever been to a natty show? Most guys that are 5'5" won't break a buck 60.
Like I said, a guy needs to consider what his goal is for bulking.

NO, I have never been to a natty show. Its really not my thing.
Now, some day I might wake up and decide that I need to get ripped and diet for the next 16 weeks or whatever it would take to get a few good photos.....but I could never live that way.
Just not my thing.
I get more excited by the weights I handle on incline bench going up to an all time PR for 5 reps ....or finally hitting a life time goal on this lift or that...
some people call it "powerbuilding" I guess which is really just bodybuilding for guys that like pizza and suds and fries I guess.
Maybe this is where "Dad bod" comes from....."A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."

Carrying some extra body fat does help lift heavy stuff, but only to an extent. After a certain threshold the extra body fat is actually counterproductive to leverages for things likes squats and deadlift. Being morbidly obese is never a real good goal to shoot for IMO. There is always a balance that can be reached. I want to be strong and lean enough to have good vascularity and abs. I don't want to be shredded bad enough to do what it takes. I also don't want to eat myself into an early death to see how much weight I can waddle under and squat. Different strokes for different folks. I think a moderate approach is the best and most effective. A small calculated and tracked surplus over a long period of time with diet periods to lean out a little seems to be the most effective for my goals.

That moment you take your old bench Max and DOUBLE IT. 385x2, 385x2, 385x2,385x1.... good day for the old man
I think I got fired up by this discussion. I did get some video of the third and forth set. Hilarious that I hit the first two sets and my camera was set on "photo" or something so it said "record"but didn't record anything.
In any case...Ill get it uploaded to share. I had never done that before."A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."
