    Try this one on for size

    Okay so, I've got a new client wanting to start who has had lower/thoracic spine surgery for bulged or herniated disc, still seeing physio on a regular basis.

    He works and travels for work regularly so will depend on restaurant food which I will monitor and advise on.

    He has severe Gout too,

    Wants to lose 10kg, usually this isn't a problem for me at all, he got in touch with me from hearing about success of other clients. I have a few clients with disc injuries etc which are fairly common but, this guy is going to be great for business if I can make an awesome impression, as well as this it would be great to get some different opinions etc.

    What would you do first?

    As tempting is it may be, I would avoid "sucking up" to him/treating him differently.

    It can be tough the first time you get a high profile client that rolls around. But if you compromise and start making exceptions just because its a nice payday, you will lose more than you gain. Good luck brother.

    Regression.

    We all need to squat, push, pull, hip hinge and do loaded carries. Find which version of each movement the person can do, and progress it. Add load, and when the load's heavy enough, try a more challenging version of the movement.

    examples -

    leg press --> goblet squat ---> barbell back/front squat
    plank --> barbell overhead press ---> barbell bench press
    bat wings ---> lat pulldown --> chinups
    dumbbell hip hinge --> rack pulls --> barbell deadlift
    farmer's walks --> suitcase carry --> waiter's walk

    In each case, teach correct movement. Add load. Adding load may degrade the form, so - teach correct movement. This process will do a lot for anyone, and a lot more for someone old and beat-up.

    I would start with a lot of stabilization and core work first.
