Woman anally raped in hospital...Egyptian law does not consider it rape
Shereen Nasser, 38, went to hospital in #Cairo in December 2012 for a surgery. While unconscious and under general anaesthesia, she was (according to her claims) raped by a doctor.
While the normal legal difficulties would be to prove whether the rape occurred, Shereen Nasser has faced a greater challenge: the law does not recognize anal rape as rape.
According to Egyptian law, only non-consensual, out of wedlock vaginal penetration with the male sexual organ is considered rape. Any other sort of 'rape' is instead considered "indecent assault," and carries lighter penalties.
While a person convicted of "rape" can be sentenced to up to 25 years in prison, a person convicted of "indecent assault" can only be sentenced to a sentence between three and 15 years.
Not only has Shereen been left with a sexually transmitted disease after the alleged rape (hospital tests right before the surgery showed she had no STDs, but after the surgery they did), Shereen is left with an inability to bring the perpetrators to justice.
