I always drink coffee at least a 30-min to an hour before any intense exercise. It's mainly for the gastric dumping. Basically, I don't like the feeling of having a brick in my gut before some intense cardio. I don't like to throw-up afterwards.

    Wake up
    500ml coffee
    1L water
100 cal 'snack' (don't like training fully fasted)...yogurt/kashi
    Gym

Water wakes me up (and keeps me from feeling dehydrated/sick during workout, especially with the coffee), coffee gives me energy, snack keeps me satiated until after workout.
Whatever works for you, but through trial and error I've found I like that the best.
