Why are shotguns the preferred weapon for home defense?

I never understood this ( especially pump action ). Unless you get your stamps they have to have an 18" barrel and be at least 26" long.

Why would you want a long arm like that in the CQC environment? Any pistol with a 30rd mag and hollowpoints would be more ideal than a shotgun.

The sound a loading a shotgun is intimidating as hell. Also, you don't have to be that accurate.

Try shooting an intruder in the dark at 30 ft with a 4" barrel vs a shotgun which will cover half of the room in one shot.

Because you don't need a permit to own a shotgun. And a lot easier to use I guess.

Personally like you said it would not be optimal in tight places so it's not my first choice, rather my shield any day over a shotgun. Plus we have guns hidden around the house so no matter what level of the home we are in, there is a weapon we can get to fairly easy

I agree the spread will be tighter in CQC, but its still going to have a bigger kill range than a pistol or rifle. I think its just the combination of intimidation and ease of use for a beginner.

A 9mm will put anyone down just as good as anything else.

If multiple people come, more capacity and being able to fire in quicker secession with minimal recoil is going to help a lot.

Lucky Man then Also you don't have to be as accurate with a shotgun. With a gun you need to practice, make sure you can hit your target. I know a few people that have never shot a weapon in their lives but have shotguns. I always laugh because one friend is soooooo unaware of weapons but has a shotgun, I asked her do you even know how to load it?

I'm not disagreeing with you at all on this. But for someone who is inexperienced with guns ( not to mention a high tension situation) they have a better chance at hitting something with a shotgun than a semi auto when in panic mode.

I'm with you though that they are long/clumsy and a handgun would be much more useful assuming you know how to use it.

Best answer here. Also, measure out the longes straight possible shots in your house, I doubt you have any clear 30 foot paths through your house....unless your in some sort of mansion or maybe a big ass ranch style house.

However, if you get on firearms boards, it seems like most people prefer their pistol of choice next to the bed and then their shotgun.

Yeah an MP5 with an double mag would be the best thing for self defense. Those things have basically no recoil at all.

What's even worse is the Hughes amendment didn't even pass legally =/

I'd rather than be able to quickly put 4 or 5 shots downrange srs. Shotgun spread in a house would be like 4-9" max anyways.
