In which case would everybody be more in danger. 1.) Robbers come in and rob store. No shots are fired, just like in 99% of armed robberies (making this statistic up). 2.)Robbers come in intending to rob store. Guy opens fire on them.

Obviously there is more danger when shots are fired, and the old guy wasn't in any presumable danger himself, so that's not self defense.

Unless they were robbing the customers in there. That I don't know, but that changes a lot. In that case he would be rightfully defending his possessions.

This. Did the gramps even consider the possibility of those robbers shooting back? A gunfight could have ensued leaving people dead, people who would have gladly given up the few dollars in their pocket if it meant leaving the place with their lives.
