    measuring cooked rice

I heard that if you don't measure the rice before cooking, its nearly impossible to be accurate. How can I measure this basmati rice if I wasn't the one who cooked it? what is 3/4 cup cooked in g?

My mom made a huge pot of it before she left to the middle east, so I was not the one to make it. Can anyone help?

IDK if this helps, but if you're just concerned about calories, 1/2 cup of cooked rice has about 110 calories.

Really, you have an electronic scale but not a measuring cup? The info is out there, just google it.

why the hell would I use a measuring cup over an electronic scale? a scale is much more accurate than pouring rice into a cup and measuring it out with the naked eye. plus, 1/2 cup = 4 oz, but you can't use that unit of conversion for things like rice because that is a liquid measurement, so your argument is invalid

Because the rice will weigh different amounts due to different water levels. Rice that is wetter when cooked will weigh more then rice that is dryer. Seriously ditch the scale and stop freaking out over like 30 calories or so.

when poruing it into a measuring cup, do you pad the rice down to make as much room as possible, or do you leave a bunch of air pockets?

^this is my issue with the measuring cup

I agree with this, no number is ever perfect and to obsess over a few calories is over the top in my opinion unless you're prepping for a serious competition. Do what you like though, however, I'm not going to do a simple internet search to find out the number of grams (that won't even be 100% accurate as you seem to require) your rice weighs.

I'm ok to use a measuring cup, but like I said, DO YOU PAD THE RICE DOWN TO MAKE ROOM OR JUST MEASURE UP TO THE 3/4 LEAVING AIR POCKETS?!??!

I personally would just pour it in while smoothing it out(not pressing with force). Either way just be consistent. Even with a scale you calories will NEVER be 100% correct. Just be consistent with measuring method and adjust quantity as needed. stop freaking out over a few extra/fewer calories.

I got my info from the caloriecount website and they don't say "packed" or "unpacked". I personally don't worry too much about it. I don't fluff up my rice to get as little as possible in the measuring cup and I don't steam roll it in there either. I just scoop it in, level it off, call it 110 calories and then eat it.

If you fluff it you need to take away 4 kcals's from the total then divide by .4

Volume is a horrible way of measuring food.

1 cup of short grain rice =/= 1 cup of long grain rice.

Also, the method of cooking the rice will vary the end weight.

Of course, it's just rice, so messing up the numbers slightly isn't the end of the world.
Short term Goal: To cut back before bulking like a demon.
Mid term Goal: To find myself.
Long term Goal: To get what's mine.

67 lbs in 9 years and still counting... (started at 100lbs)

It's a hater's job to hate. So let them hate...
