I didn't train at all this past weekend, due to the house and moving, which sucked tremendously. But, this was expected and planned and worked into the training cycle. I knew I would miss a weekend when the closing came through, and quite honestly I needed a week off from benching and squatting. I did train last Tuesday and Thursday as well as this Tue and last night. I will train this weekend. My only worry is that the moving has taken a bit of a toll on me, especially my back and my shoulders a bit, I felt a little fatigued this week,....so we'll see how it goes.
So cause I haven't posted in awhile, heres some back stuff I did yesterday:
Thursday December 15th 2011
150 crunches
Lat Pulldowns
about 5 sets - 12-8 reps
Padded T-Bar Rows (Chest Supported Row, I call them padded ts)
4 plates x 8
5 plates x 8
5 plates/quarter x 8
6 plates/dime x 7
7 plates x 4
Dumbbell Rows
120 x 10
160 x 12
Machine Preacher Curls
5 sets x 12-8, last set drop set
Quick one, but was good. Had to get home to work on the plumbing under my kitchen sink. Joy....

Felt good today, shoulder didn't hurt too much today and the weight felt real light in my hands. 460 went up pretty quick. Haven't hit 460 in quite some time. No video today, camera is still packed somewhere. Weight is down to 264.8. Not surprised since my eating has been off the past week and a half. Tomorrow I try to squat. Not sure what I'll do for next weekend since its Christmas next Sunday and the gym will be closed, so not sure when I'll squat next week.Crom Laughs....

Sunday December 18th 2011
Squat Day
5 minutes on the bike, followed by stretching my back and hamstrings
140x6
230x5
320x3
420x3
480x2
530x1
580x1 - nose started bleeding
620x1
650x1
670x1
Paused Leg Curls
4 sets x 12-6
Calf Raises (on leg press)
4 sets x 20
Well, wasn't a bad day, but not a great day either. I might have been a bit high on 670. I do have video, but I had someone else video than my normal guy and he did it from high and behind, so pretty useless. I knew it would be a rough day. My back was still not recovered from all the moving and work with the house, but I couldn't take another week off from squatting, I was also just all around a bit fatiqued, despite a good bench day the day before. Back was sore starting the morning. I also knew it would be rough when 420 and 480 felt light, they usually feel heavy. From 580 on felt like ****, but it moved. I was gonna cut it at 650 and be happy I did something. But I was called a few select names by Troy and had to go for 670. Didn't feel too bad, and I felt I hit depth, but I leaned forward and I think thats why I felt I did, and the lean also hurt the back again. I am also about 5 pounds lighter, lost 5 during this whole move bull****. I also kinda of felt off the whole day.
So the good: I was able to get work in, got some heavy weight in
Bad: I cut 670 a tad, leaned forward and back is really sore today. Puts in question squatting next week. Since I would have to squat Saturday since the gym is closed Sunday and I have to work a double Monday. Only a few weeks left to go. Lots of stretching, icing and heating this week.
If I SOMEHOW hit 700 in January, I am retiring....Crom Laughs....

Certainly leaning that way...but at this rate, I don’t think 700 is happening at this meet, so may be awhile yet….
I had to take my wife to the doctor today, she hurt her back doing too much **** at the house. So I figured while I was there I’d have him check mine, since I still have a terrible knot in it and made me miss training this weekend.
So he did some tests to see what hurt my back and at one point pushed down on my leg as I tried to move it up. Yeah, had no problem, he goes wow you have strong legs. LOL.
Told him I need to squat Sunday and compete in a month. Got LOTS of muscle relaxers and Motrin!!Crom Laughs....

I was able to get some back work in today. The knot in my back actually seemed to loosen up a bit and didn’t really bother me. Hopefully it doesn’t tighten up again , its still there and back is still sore.
Pulldowns
6 sets total – 10-8 reps
Padded T-bars
4 plates x 10
5 plates x 10
5 plates/quarter x 8
6 plates/dime x 8
7 plates x 5
Dumbbell Rows
110x10
140x10
170x7 – coulda got more, grip gave out – but grip is better than it has been, most I’ve done 170s for is 3-4
Machine Preacher Curl
4 sets x 10-8
Seated Machine Curl
3 sets x 8
Hammer Curls
40x10
45x10
50x8
I use mostly machines to train biceps. My rear delts seem to take over doing any type of free weight curl. So I feel there are mostly useless for me. And besides its biceps. They’re like ornaments on a Christmas tree and Christmas just passed…..Crom Laughs....

I have a real bad knot in my left lower back, been taking muscle relaxers and 800mg Motrin 3 times a day, not really doing much. Though, the Motrin is helping my other pains. Saw my chiropractor yesterday. He worked on the knot in my back and says its really deep its hard for him to get to. He thinks the soft tissue may be pulling on a nerve, makes sense since I was told a while ago my an ortho doc, that I have lots of scar tissue in my lower back that gets inflamed and is the cause of most of my pain .Going back Wednesday.
Anyway, back was bothering me benching today but mostly getting off the bench. I’m chalking up the missing 455 due to the fact that I have benched just twice in the last month. But I still felt strong, and by the end of the workout, my back loosened a bit and so far hasn’t tightened back up, so I am VERY CAUTIOUSLY optimistic that its getting better. But not squatting tomorrow, again, but MAY try to do some LIGHT leg pressing. Just to at least get some blood pumping in the legs. We’ll see.
Weight is still down a bit, was 265 this morning.Crom Laughs....

Thanks, but I do have a pretty ok chiro right now. Known him over 10 years now. I think I am the only real powerlifter he sees, but he does treat a lot of bodybuilders like Vic Martinez, and MMA guys and a lot of other athletes, so he knows what I need. I’m going back to see him Wednesday. What I am thinking about and looking into is possibly getting Trigger Point Injections. By partner and now neighbor, Troy is the orthopedic field and suggested it and is looking into if theres someplace I can go locally for it. Needles don’t bother me in the least, so I’ll down to try.
Plus Ossining is too far for me to travel. LOL.Crom Laughs....

Sunday January 1st 2012
Leg Press
No weight x 15
2 plates x 15
4 plates x 15
6 plates x 15
8 plates x 15
10 plates x 35
12 plates x 12
Laying Leg Curls
4 sets x 15
Calf Raises on leg press
8 plates – 4 sets x 20
My back tightened up a bit last night. Took a real hot shower then rolled around on the lacrosse ball at the gym, loosened it up a bit. Took it light on the leg pressing, though, it didn’t bother my back at all. Did these with Troy. He knew I was in no mood for high reps, so he took the 10 plates (5 each side) and did 21. So I taught him a lesson and did 35.
Back is still feeling pretty loose right now, but the knot is still there.Crom Laughs....

385x3
405x2
Incline Hammer Strength
5 sets x 10
Cable Crossovers
3 sets x 12
Pressdowns
5 sets x 15
Good come back day since I missed 455 last week. But like I said last week, I chalked that up to only benching twice in the previous 4 weeks. I knew the strength was there. Haven’t benched 460 in a long time, felt pretty good. Troy mentioned that it flew off my chest, just need more upper end work and I can bench a lot more than 460. Only problem is my shoulder might not let me. Still have the bad knot in my back, loosened up again training today. But its obvious its not going away on its own, so gonna have to see someone else. Troy recommended a doctor from the HSS that I will see if he takes my insurance and try to see him next week and maybe get a shot or 2 or 3 or more!!Crom Laughs....

I haven’t posted in a awhile and the reason is because there wasn’t much to post and was waiting till I had all the answers before I did. So this post may be long.
I mentioned in my 12/19 log that I hurt my back squatting 670. Thought it was getting better than got a bit worse. So I leg pressed the following week. Felt like a really bad know in my left lower back. Next week, felt a bit better and since I wanted to squat and severely hate leg pressing, I squatted. Just went up to 500, but the whole time felt off. Left leg felt kinda weak and was feeling a bit numb the whole time, so cut it at 500. Next day back was in a bad way. Troy suggested going to a specialist in Manhatten. So I did make an appointment, but I had to wait 2 weeks to see him. Meantime, I was in bad pain. Went back to my regular doctor and he gave me ********, didn’t help much. He also sent me for the MRI since he said the specialist would send me for one anyway, and it would be a waste of a trip.
I told my doctor I needed an open MRI, I am claustrophobic and I have this need to know I can get out of something whenever I want to. He sent me to a place that apparently had one. I get there, they give me a gown that is at least 2 sizes too small, I ask for a bigger one and the guy says well you’re a really big guy. I go in and it’s a closed one, WTF?? I decide to try it cause I really needed it done, but I ask the guy a bunch of questions, cause I’m ****ing nervous and don’t like the thing, he tells me I’m high maintenance, so after restraining the urge to throw him through the window to show how high maintenance I am, I get in, didn’t last long and told him to get me out. So, I get send to a REAL open one.
Nice place, they play music and let my wife hang in the room with me. Still put me all the way in and its tight, but I can see out the side. Didn’t go TOO bad. This was this Monday. I go back to my doctor this Tuesday, and he reads me the report and makes it sound really bad. 3 herniated discs. Says how I shouldn’t lift anymore. So, I am pretty freakn depressed and upset. I call my buddy Troy(whos now my neighbor), and he comes over and checks the MRI and reads the report, he says its not that bad and that even the report says its mild herniations.
That brings me to today. I went to the Hospital for Special Surgery to see Doctor Seth Waldman, Director of Musculorskeletal and Interventional Pain Management Division in the city(I hate going to the city when I am off!! I work there every ****ing day!!), one of the top doctors in this field. Troy meets me there, he works there, and brings me up. I had to wait in the room for over 30 min, but he finally came in. He reviewed my MRI, but was disappointed in the quality, apparently open MRIs aren’t as good because the resolution isn’t as clear cause the magnets are moved further away. Plus the fact I carry a lot of muscle makes it harder.(his words) He said it wasn’t bad as well, but only sees 2 herniated discs. So we talk about how it happened and all that(was very impressed with what I squat, lol), Then gave me a back examine which I passed no problem, so he says that was good, but all my symptoms’ point to the L3 nerve. So, he said I can wait and see if it gets better on its own, or get an epidural injection, this will not just numb the pain, but he will inject the steroid right by the disc to relieve the inflammation. Its NOT a temporary fix. He said it will fix this episode, unless of cause I aggravate it again, but it will nto come back on its own. I opted for this, even though I am not too thrilled about getting a huge needle injected into my spine, and trust me, its not the needle I don’t like, I am PLENTY used to needles.
So, where does that eventually leave me. Well, I asked the doctor if I will be able to squat again. Short answer, yes. Squat at the level I do, he cant answer unless I get a clearer MRI. However, he said he cant say that I cant, however theres always a risk, but that risk is there regardless. So his advice is to wait a week after the injection, then slowly work myself up. He said if I do want another MRI, I will have to go into the regular one, but suggests they knock me out. Even he said its not easy for me just cause of my width alone.
Heres the other question, and one I knew before I even saw the doctor. Even if I can squat to my level again, DO I WANT TO??
Now, in my 20’s and even early 30’s I gave no regard to stuff like this and would do anything to lift big, didn’t care what I had to take, if I got hurt or how it would affect me later in life. But aging has a way of changing your views on things and life in general. Getting married as well, I got married later in life,35. And no, I am not having kids, I don’t want them, nor my wife and she is a lot older than me anyway so that’s really out regardless.
So I guess it will probably come down to how bad I want it and IF I still want it. Its been getting harder and harder to want it and even this last training cycle I found myself struggling to keep going, pains don’t help with this. But, there was a few more goals I wanted to accomplish before I “retired”. And I don’t like the idea of having not retiring on my own terms. Though I will always lift heavy to a certain degree. I like being big and being strong regardless.
My ultimate goals were squat at least 700, bench 500 and total 1800. The 700 and 1800 are/where MORE than doable and shoulda happened in 09.The 500 bench will not happen unless my shoulders get 15 years younger. But I can live with that. I think 470-480 is in them. So, I will take my time and see how things go and let time help answer this question for me. Because if I had to answer it right now, the answer would be I am done. But as Troy said, that’s how you feel now, once you start feeling good, you’ll want to. And he may be right.
Right now, I am backing off the heavy heavy stuff in everything, I might not even bench for a few weeks or a couple months, give the shoulder some rest. But I will keep my core strength there as best I can (wont be a problem) and keep my weight around the high 250s low 260s. Maybe I’ll cut up a bit since I was recently told how I should be a bodybuilder since I have the size and shape…LOL!! Also, work with Troy and come up with a game plan to make all parts of my back stronger, since I was limited in some things cause my back always bothered me.
Not sure how much I will keep this log up, not much point in saying I did X reps on the X machine…LOL!! But I’ll be around.Crom Laughs....

sounds like there have been a few ups and downs in terms of hearing the worst possible news and then getting a different diagnosis. sorry to hear that you've reached this point, but if you're ready to stop the powerlifting life, i have no doubt you won't slack in the gym and would remain strong as fck.
good look with your recover and with making your decision man! thanks for laying it all out for usKeep getting bigger and stronger without messing up my joints (already pretty screwed)

Thanks guys, appreciate it. Right now I'm just concerned with getting rid of the pain, Then I'll take it from there. This is my life and training will always be a part of it to some degree. I will still train heavy and stay as big as I can. Its just who I am. I just have to decide if I want to take it back to that level or just be happy squatting 500or so for reps. LOL. We will see, but I will keep my core strength going and size, so if I do choose to compete, it won't take much to get there.
After my last meet in Oct of 09, I didn't train heavy till the end of Jan 2011. I didn't squat more than 540 or so that whole time. By May I was squatting over 600 again. So I'm not worried there.
Or like I mentioned, I can work on cutting up and do some bodybuilding. Saturday I trained using only the Hammer Strength machines(I actually like them), and got the most incredible pump in my chest!!!
Instead of videos I can just post progress pics every week!!Crom Laughs....
So, how long are you gonna keep powerlifting?
- Until they drain my blood out and fill me with embalming fluid I'm gonna do this....
