    Considering getting into mountain biking

I'm going to start next year and I need advice/links/pointers from people who are experienced in it.

Seems like a helluva time and I want to get into more active out-of-gym stuff.

yeaaaah buddy. Check out the mtbr or pinkbike forums. Figure out what kind of trails are near you, and what sort of bike is appropriate for 90% of the riding you do. Remember in the 80s and 90s we were all rigid or on hardtails and you don't need fancy suspension or gadgets or 29er wheels to go fast and have fun. Also, used is the way to go, especially if you can do your own wrenching.

But you live in Michigan, how about xc skiing? Skate skiing is about the most ridiculous aerobic activity there is, and you can combine it with shooting, which is great.
