I Get No Respect - Robert Wilkerson

So I was at Barnes & Nobles and picked up a copy of powerlifting USA and power magazines. I don't remember which one, but in it is the rant of the month. This rant was written by none other than the powerlifting sensation, Wilkerson. In this article, he says "...why do I have to do so much more just to get a 'respectable' squat? I mean, really, do I need to squat 4 inches deeper, walk it out, and play the piano with my toes...?" No buddy, I would be happy with just the 4 inches deeper. Then later in the article he says us critics are destroying the sport of powerlifting with our "petty jealousy and egos." I wish I could get back the three minutes it took to read this article. What is happening in powerlifting? This isn't just about Wilkerson, we need to shape up powerlifting if we want it to get main stream. In my opinion, we need to cut the amount of federations, especially ones like the SPF that are passing the trash that they call "squats."

Well he's right about not getting respect, but he's wrong about deserving any. I guess 1 out of 2 isn't bad.

The simple solution for him is to replicate his squat (but to actual depth) in any federation that allows video from the side and is reputable. Nobody is stopping him from doing it. It's not like it's impossible for him to earn the respect of everybody.

At this point, it would be pretty hard for him to earn that respect even if he did finally produce the squat everyone is looking for. The lack of character he's shown through all this hogwash has definitely damaged his reputation and discredited his legitimacy.

Eh, I think those things would be forgiven/forgotten if he produced a legitimate squat. However, I doubt that will ever happen.

I don't doubt some people would forgive/forget (or whatever), but I guarantee some wouldn't. Once you go as far as Wilkerson has, you've permanently damaged your reputation to some degree unless you do a full turn around, which isn't likely.

I hear he's gonna lose some weight, maybe with less gut in the way and a lower hip crease (not puffed up by fat) he actually will hit closer to depth. I'm an optimist I guess.

maybe. we will see, there's no reason he couldnt lose some of the gut and get to where he can hit 1k with actual depth...we're just waiting for our russian guy to do it any day now (I always forget his name).
