    The Science of Fat

To start off ->> A few links for those who want to learn more about adipose tissue on a physiological basis (how it works... and how to get rid of it)!

    Fat Metabolism
    The basics of fat storage

    EndoText -Regulation of Energy Expenditure
"...Humans gain or lose weight when a mismatch exists between energy intake and energy expenditure (Figure 1). Due to the potentially important role of energy expenditure in controlling body weight, there has been much interest in processes which contribute to and regulate total body energy expenditure. This interest takes the form of three general questions. 1) Is obesity caused by deficiencies in energy expenditure, and if so, what mechanisms are nonfunctional in obese individuals? 2) How is energy expenditure regulated and what molecular mechanisms are responsible for this regulation? 3) Can energy expenditure be increased by pharmacologic agents and can this be used as a treatment for obesity? Towards addressing these questions, this chapter will explore the role of reduced energy expenditure in causing obesity and the molecular mechanisms which are thought to regulate energy expenditure..."

Encyclopedia of Sports Medicine and Science: Adipose Tissue
"...Adipose tissue is specialized connective tissue that functions as the major storage site for fat in the form of triglycerides. Adipose tissue is found in mammals in two different forms: white adipose tissue and brown adipose tissue. The presence, amount, and distribution of each varies depending upon the species. Most adipose tissue is white, the focus of this review..."

Medscape Article on Adipose Tissue: From Lipid Storage Compartment to Endocrine Organ
"...Adipose tissue, when carried around in excessive amounts, predisposes to a large number of diseases. Epidemiological data show that the prevalence of obesity has significantly increased over the past 20 years and continues to do so at an alarming rate. Here, some molecular aspects of the key constituent of adipose tissue, the adipocyte, are reviewed..."

International Journal of Obesity Article on: Integrative physiology of human adipose tissue
"....In this review we have attempted to illustrate the complexity of adipose tissue function, with an emphasis on the dynamic nature of this tissue... we will cover some aspects of the regulation of fat storage and mobilisation; the regulation of adipose tissue blood flow and the role of adipose tissue innervation; some aspects of the secretory functions of adipose tissue as they relate to regulation of fat balance; and finally, to demonstrate the integrative nature of adipose tissue function, possible oscillatory behaviour of the adipose tissue mass..."

Pharmacological Targeting of Adipocytes/Fat Metabolism for Treatment of Obesity and Diabetes
"...Obesity is now recognized as a rapidly increasing worldwide threat to health, largely as a result of causing diabetes. Thus, considerable efforts are underway in the pharmaceutical industry to find drugs to treat this condition. Target validation in various academic and industrial laboratories has revealed a number of potential molecular targets in fat cells or adipocytes. By definition, obesity is too much fat, and we here review efforts to treat obesity and, by proxy, diabetes by modulating the metabolic state of adipocytes...."

I did my doctoral research in morbid obesity and type 2 diabetes. For as much as we know, there's still a mountain more that we still don't know. Fascinating topic. Especially the area of adipocytokines. Google it.

I have a question regarding "The science of fat loss - Muscular devolpment" article. It seems he is suggesting that fasting is the prefered state for fat burning and when in a "fed" state, our body turns off most hormones that assist/promote/incite fat loss. Anyone care to elaborate?

Talking I should have lost more fat?

Cor blimey, I like reading but...

Who can offer some advice please?

I started training really hard 7 weeks ago and for the last 6 weeks I have been training twice a day with one day off per week. I kickbox for 1 hour at 9am and then I go to the gym around 4pm and work one body part plus abs. 7 weeks ago at the start of my training I was 186 pounds with bodyfat of 18.3%, today my weight is 179 pound and my body fat is around 17.3%. I have put on some muscle and firmed around my middle but I would have expected my body fat to be lower. Any suggestions please? My diet on average is about 45% protein, 17% good fat and 38% carbs. I have been supplementing for just over one week with Creatine Mono, Tribulus, Dynamize ISO 100 Whey and Monster 100 Multivit. Thanks in advance guys!

What I took from it was that insulin stopped the enzymes responsible for fat breakdown, from doing their job. So fasting state (negative caloric balance) is necesary, but that it's also very important to limit carbohydrate intake so we don't potentiate insulin.

**** yeah RP 2012, btw. Too bad it's all about Obamney.

I'm new to this forum bare with me. I have spent the last three years losing 300 pounds. The last year has been spent building back my muscle tone. My body fat is 10%. But I have lingering belly fat that I've been told only way to get rid of it is surgery,
is this true? My diet and exercise program is spot on. I do not want to have surgery to get rid of it I want to do it naturally any advice. I'm 60 years old.

After that kind of loss, you probably have some fat remaining inside a lot of loose skin. You can reduce the appearance of it by losing the last of the fat and getting very lean, which will just leave the skin. The only way to get rid of the skin itself (if there's a fair bit of it) is surgery.

This last bit of fat is very difficult to get rid of Without losing muscle at the same time. I will have the surgery soon as I can afford it. I probably have 10 pounds of extra skin
