This.
Unless you eat like an anorexic girl, in most cases your body isn't "starving" when you wake up. Sure, the body's in a more catabolic state compared to say the night before when you've got x good meals in you, but the body itself is still working it's way through your (hopefully) high caloric diet.
To answer the OP, i do eggs + oats (blended, then cooked as protein pancakes) for Meal 1's when i don't have to go train an early client/s, and i do whey + oats (blended) for when i do have to do early morning sessions. Purely for convinience. I prefer food whenever physically possible. I just save whey for after gym, that's it.advertising/self-promotion not permitted

I'm all about solid food too, although on Fridays I do start with a protein shake early morning, then eat more 2 hours later. For the most part of the work week when I wake up, I first have 2 scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, 100% whole wheat bread w/olive oil butter and 2 cups of skim milk w/fat free chocolate syrup. It's a power packed start to the day! Then, I follow up with a mid morning protein shake to keep the protein charge going.
