I have marked on these pictures the 'dip' that I am talking about. Is that there because my love handles are too big? There is not just one, smooth continuous curve from the love handles to thigh...it gets broken up by that dip. I hate it!
Is this something that will go away when my love handles reduce in size? Or would it still be there even if I lost all the weight I could (is it just my body shape, bone structure or whatever?)
I am confused as to why it's there and if it's possible to get rid! Can I build muscle in that area to get one, defined curve and no dip?

In kinesiology, the professor said that some people will have it because of their tensor fasciae latae muscles being larger than the surrounding muscles.

I too have the same issue. I struggle so bad with my stubborn love handles. It takes a while to lose them. I have been on this weight loss regime for over a year and I still havent gotten rid of them. I find if you hit your obliques hard, it helps balance it out a bit.
