How long does it take to form a habit?

I once heard from a friend that doing anything consistently for 30 days will result in a habit. Does anyone share a similar belief? Has anyone here experienced the conscience forming of a habit?

I think it depends on the behavior. Seems like it takes about a week to get in the habit of having dessert after dinner or playing video games when you get home from work and forever to create healthier habits.

I have actually heard, which may sound extreme compared to the other answers that mentally and psychologically it takes your mind 6 full weeks to form a habit. Before that it's just kind of a mental thing that you remember to do. After the 6 weeks it's something that just happens without thinking about it.
Do or do not -- There is no try.
Anything worth doing, is worth over-doing.

    Body weight - 179 lbs
    Current MAX

    Bench - 340 lbs
    Squat - 435 lbs
Deadlift - 410 (didn't actually max this, but I did it for 2 reps in the middle of my 10 week program, so I will count it)

    Current total - 1185 raw @ 180 lbs

I was told that it takes 24 days to create a habit (if you do it daily).. I am not sure about this tho.

I'd say 30 days. Pretty sure I became hooked after around that period of time.

    I agree with this

I had the habit of always chewing/biting my fingernails off and I had to physically stop myself from doing it for about 2 - 3 weeks and I don't anymore. There are a ton of other habits as well..

There is no set time it takes to form a habit. All actions are different. The time it takes for smoking to become a habit is not the same time it takes to have going to the gym always be a habit. Even when your used to do doing something for an extended period of time its still easy to stop doing it, especially if it requires a lot of effort.
