My best advice when it comes to females and PMS:
Stay away from the scales and mirrors. They are not your friend this time of the month, but they will be your friend next week. We hold water which means increase in weight. It happens...it will be gone soon. CRAVINGS...This is the time when you need to SUCK IT UP! It's all about sheer willpower...so the question is "how bad do you want it?" Sorry, it's the truth and I've never been one to sugar coat anything.
Dark chocolate, little PB and a protein shake...that's as far as I'll go.
Good luck.National Level Competitor (Female BB)

Get out of the house. Thats the only thing that helps me. I get like that every month. Eating anything in sight, even if I'm full. Getting out and hitting the mall or the park- anywhere just away from food.
No effort is ever wasted, even the slightest attempt at transforming ourselves makes a difference. It is our patient cumulative effort that grows into self-realization sooner or later.

When I am feeling really munchy (not real hunger) I try to occupy my hands...i.e. paint my nails, read a book (it is kind of hard to eat and hold a book at the same time), brush your teeth, chew some gum, clean (you can't sneak food when your hands smell like bleach!), drink some green tea, read a fitness mag, hope on bb.com (helps keep your goals in sight)...I just keep doing little things to keep me busy.
I also employ my husband's help. When I am feeling very weak I ask him to not let me sneak in treats. Haha! It sometimes makes me mad at him, but I know it is for the best.
If all else fails I will take a nap - you can't eat while sleeping!
Stay strong, remember it will pass and keep your goals in mind.

To quote my answer from another post on the same subject a little while ago
You are right in that ovulation is mid cycle (~ 14 days pre mestrual)... But oestrogen peaks just prior to ovulation, during the late follicular phase... it then slowly decreases (with one more 'small peak') during the luteal phase/ post ovulation (it is the cells around the maturing egg(s) that are responsible for secretion of oestrogen - so when the egg(s) are released these cells change and oestrogen decreases)...
So when you crave is where progesterone levels are + (++)...
And most of the evidence (in both animals and humans) suggest it is this combination of the lower oestrogen and higher progesterone that results in the increased hunger (Progesterone is basically the 'baby hormone'... it is what maintains the body in 'you are pregnant mode' and helps to establish the foetus (until you start to get other things having more of a role)).
Other things that occur are an increase in cortisol levels, and a drop in your serotonin --> and both of these increases carb cravings BIG TIME (and play the wacky with your blood sugar too)... And there is also a slight increase in your metabolic rate during the luteal phase too - which stimulates hunger...
Lastly - there also seems to be electrolyte changes that occur (mag especially seen to decrease) - which are probably related to changes in mineralocorticoids (stimulated when you stimulate cortisol)... And this is thought to cause cravings too (especially of the chocolate kind)...
Basically ->>>
increased metabolic rate
falling oestrogen
increased progesterone
increased cortisol
decreased serotonin
(magnesium / electrolyte odd-ness)
+ other things....
^^
All these combine to give ick.
My advice is not to 'fight' it but instead - you are better off to go with the flow and increase your intake slightly over the week before your cycle (eg: add 50-100 cals.... my choice is a yummy bit of dark chocolate to help with the magnesium issues ).

I had terrible PMS and after a year of messing with different things, my gyno put me on 20 mg of Prozac -once a day for ten days before my period. I cannot recommend that enough to anyone who has major mood and hunger shifts during this time, it has so helped me. I still do get hunger pangs - mine are more salty than chocolate - but no where near what it was and my mood swings were terrible and that has stopped also.
