Bringing a workout log to the gym and then later recording it on my workout journal here on the forum has to be one of the most beneficial things I've ever done to help me get gains. I have been making PR's EVERY SINGLE WEEK because of the use of an workout journal. Heres why:
1) Knowing When You've Overloaded: Muscular hypertrophy occurs simply when your muscles are overloaded, which occurs when you add MORE reps or weight from your previous workout. WITH a workout journal, you can precisely see how many reps you did the week before (you will NOT be able to remember the exact number, trust me) and if you add even ONE REP, you have overloaded your muscles! Simple as that. When you have an EXACT goal rep in your mind, its much easier to get it, and guess what, you have taken one step to muscular overload. If you don't keep a journal, you will probably end up doing the same amount of reps, THINKING you had a good workout. Well, your not going to get bigger staying at what you did before.
2) Constructive Criticism: You don't know everything in the world of bodybuilding and exercise. Many people will visit your journal and read over your workouts. High chances are, they will criticize you if your doing something wrong. I have had a lot of mistakes corrected by high-knowledged users on this site, and their wisdom has still stayed with me. Seriously though, you don't know everything, and the only way to gain knowledge is to absorb it first.
3) Discovering Counterproductive Patterns/Traces: With a workout journal, you will be able to see patterns or traces of plateauing, over training, bad programs, etc-. If you see reps/lifts dropping, your energy dropping, (if you jot down mental notes) and just plain failure in what your doing, change what your doing! You will NOT be able to see this precisely if you do NOT have a journal! You will not be able to remember reps/weight from 3-4 weeks ago! Maybe even the last w weeks too! Fellow forum users like said above will most likely also aid in helping you get back up from your decline in gains.
4: Having fun looking back: This is sort of a joke, but seriously, looking back at your journal will be a fun trip back to memory lane. You can see how many mistakes you probably made before and laugh at it. You'll also realize what a journey it was coming to your current physique/strength.
I'm not trying to be a ***, I'm just pointing out something that has really helped my gains the last few weeks. I have been making PR's in EVERY SINGLE LIFT because I have a workout journal. This is because I know how much more I need to do every single week. Do yourself a favor guys, and start a journal.

I dont keep an online journal but I make sure to keep one with me when I workout. Ive gotten better results than ever before because I can make sure that I increase the overload whether I have to use advanced techniques or whatever. I would definatly suggest it.
