bottom line, the people in the military are doing what is asked of them, and for the most part nothing more. i know many of those fighting over in iraq and afghanistan would not be over there if they had the choice. they would be at home with their familys and kids enjoying what they work to defend, FREEDOM. this country was founded on the belief that we shouldn't be over taxed and we would have limited government. as i sit here and watch my country become more and more socialist, i want to know what have we accomplished in the 230 odd years that america has been around. i believe we have regressed as a country in relation to the fundamental beliefs that were founded on. no offense to liberals but "for the most part" they want more government and more taxes.... i dont believe in that

But I would never say being a soldier fighting in a war is okay because it's "a job". If (if) I went that route I would suggest that because it's a job that:

(a) Functions to benefit society/the world when performing peacekeeping roles as well as fighting in wars;
(b) Doesn't involve breaking any laws;
(c) That has contributed to the country by producing people of character (e.g., Eisenhower, pretty much any non-****ty president except Clinton, Powell);
(d) Traditionally (when not misused by the administration) does work for the "greater good" -- as in fighting in WWII against the Nazi perpetrators you mention.

I do understand how analogies work. I just think your's is a tenuous one at best because the only thing the roles you mentioned have in common is that they can be considered "jobs". Stronger analogies generally compare more than one point.

Again, if you're disagreeing with the war, the Bush2 administration, or the soldiers that are doing morally, ethically, and legally reprehensible actions overseas... fine. If you're protesting soldiers because they're soldiers... I don't know.

Did you not suggest that a German citizen who disapproved of Hitler and his actions but did not disapprove of the German soldiers because they were following orders was AS culpable as a full-fledged member of the Third Reich who approved of both Hitler and the soldiers?

What I'm saying is that someone who defends the actions of American soldiers based on "following orders" must also defend the actions of Nazi soldiers on the same basis. Either there is more to it than "they were just following orders," or you really think that being ordered to do something voids you of any responsibility for any action.

The "shock value" is common in logical reasoning when trying to see if someone is actually consistent in their reasoning. Either giving an action a job title justifies it or it doesn't. It is not only relevant to certain jobs. It's either a justification for actions or it is not.

Just to clear something up. We are fighting the same people in Iraq as we are in Afganistan and I believe terrorists should be killed regardless of thier location. My problem with Iraq is that the military's hands have been tied there so that dirty politicians can make more money. That's why I said no police action and no politicians involved in statigic decisions.
