In my ongoing quest to eat as clean as possible while cutting, I've stumbled upon TVP (textured vegetable protein) ... a dehydrated soy product. I found it at Whole Foods, it's organic and fairly inexpensive (a 10oz. bag -- 11 servings -- for less than $3). When rehydrated, it has the texture of warm grape nuts, and like tofu, takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with.
Per 1/2 cup serving (1/4 cup dry), it's got just 80 cals, 0g fat, 7g carbs, 4g fiber, and a whopping 12g of protein. I've tried it made with beef stock (low sodium) and black beans (best taste so far), and with chicken stock and mixed in ground chicken or chicken breast. Not horrible, but not great either.
Anyone else eat it? Any suggestions for recipes?

I've had TVP before cooked with almond milk and cinnamon, really liked it! If it tastes good with oats it probably works well using TVP.
Lot's of people use it as a meat substitute in chilli/taco's/meatloaf. etc. I think it would be great in a rice curry dish. Just play around with it.Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen.

I use it as an oatmeal "replacement" I mix it with 2-3 tbsp of coconut flour, vanilla, cinnamon and a dollop of greek yogurt. It's really yummy! Filling too. You could sub the coconut flour for flax meal too.

I ate TVP a lot growing up (very health conscious parents). It's basically like tofu, it absorbs the flavors of whatever you cook it with. Sometimes I saute it in the juices that are left over when you cook down chicken/lamb/whatever, that tastes pretty good. I've never had it as a desert though, I might try that now...

TVP is anything BUT a clean food though Lots of processing to get the protein extracted from a plant. It is used a ton in cereals like Kashi, protein bars, fake burgers, all that sorta higher protein processed food stuff.

Stevia if you are using unsweetened protein powder
DIRECTIONS
Combine all the ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes. Serve immediately. I topped mine with Greek yogurt, blueberries, and almonds.

I’m veggie so no stranger to TVP. Soy (and associated product) gives me a bit of a dodgy tummy if I eat too much of it though.
Is it relatively unusual to find in the US? Very common here in UK (although I’d guess most people don’t know what it is or the fact they are eating it in a lot of food).
