    something strange is going on!

i have a friend that i weight train with, and also wrestle with. i am stronger than him when it comes to weight lifting, yet he can almost out muscle me when we grapple/wrestle. why is that? if i am stronger than him when lifting weights, shouldn't i be stronger and more dominant when we wrestle each other? i just don't get it. *scratches head*

i guess it has to do with functional strength...i.e...i may be able to out lift mariano rivera,,but i cannot throw a cutter 90+mph....so maybe if he's been wrestling longer, he's just stronger when it comes to wrestling

Is he shorter than you? Cause leverage has a huge part in it.

first thought has to be technique esp if your stronger than him but you can be that much stronger if he can beat you.
people ask me how to train, and i answer "i look at what you do and then i do the exact oposite"

if your family was captured and you were told you needed to put 100 pounds onto your max squat within two months or your family would be executed, would you squat once per week? Something tells me that you'd start squatting every day

I agree with a lot of guys on here saying the technique. It also has to do with how well he can put his overall strength together. This is especially important in sports like wrestling or MMA.

What about power cleans? I have known guys that can out bench or squat another guy but cannot power clean more. If he has more power overall or can use all of his muscles together better, than he has the advantage. Same is true for a lot of sports especially football. A guy might be stronger or faster but if you can put it together better and have more power than you can run him over.

"unknowns" can boost strength a lot. I'm way faster in a game situation than i am in a training situation.
