Possibly Warren G. Harding, however I was not around then to verify.

No. He was truly awful and he was the worst President in my lifetime (previously that dishonor was held by Carter) but there are guys who are worse.
It's not a very popular sentiment, but I personally think Lincoln was one of the worst. He caused the deaths of many Americans in a War that should not have been fought. States should have the right to leave the Union if they don't like how things are going.. it's kind of one of the principles this country was founded on. He gets kudos for ending slavery, which was an abomination, but it would have eventually ended anyway and thousands of Americans wouldn't have died.Last edited by JUSA; 12-26-2008 at 10:05 AM.
All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.

It amazes me how much the media can skew peoples perception of things. In this era, Id be willing to bet that probably NO president will be viewed as 'good'. They paint a picture of anybody the way they want it to look. And the majority of people will go with it.
Bush handled the situation that was placed on him the way he saw fit. Thats why we (halfway) elected him, to do what he saw fit as our president. There are a lot of things that bush did that are seen as bad, that in truth are not. The media just does not put those facts out there and it leads people to form opinions that are biased.

Bush, more than any other president, has helped destroy the ballance of powers we're supposed to have in our government. It's not his reaction to events like Katrina or 9/11 that makes him a bad president, it's his blatant disregard for the constitution. Things like his "constitution free zone" should be what signifies him a bad president.

Buchanan sat on his hands while the country dissolved into Civil War.
Wilson let himself be manipulated by Colonel House into sending us into WWI.
FDR established the idea of BIG Brother government. He also forbade the use of gas warfare on Pacific Islands, which made our guys have to hunt guys hiding in caves.
Finally, our Founding Fathers did not expressly forbid the use of fiat currency in our Constitution, nor forbid the use of taxes to fund government. Now we are ruined.
See, there's lots of blame to go around.

FDR was awful.. keeping entrepeneurs scared of opening businesses out of fear of the government going socialist and staking claim in your hard work, is NOT the way to run the country
bush wasn't great, but he was by no means the worst. CONGRESS, in my opinion, is at about the worst it's ever been, but bush and congress are two different entities. God help us all when our single-digit approval rating congress teams up with a president-elect who sees eye to eye with their socialist policies. if you think bush was bad, you've seen nothing yet.siggy

Not the worst prez. ever, just...well let me explain this in terms of geometry, if you will.
Operating solely in quadrant I,
If the x-axis is how bad the president is (greater magnitude being worse president), and the y-axis is how bad the circumstances of his term(s) were, then the GWB triangle would have the hypotenuse of greatest magnitude.
But still...

I totally agree. Slavery, (if you've actually looked beyond your high school history class) wasn't the crux of the conflict. It was due to the impostion of the FEDERAL government over the Rights of States. Which, is still one of the major sources of conflict in this country today.
p.s. Little known fact: The South was considering ending slavery long before Lincoln did. Jefferson Davis called in Feburary of 1865 for the "prompt abolution of slavery"
The slavery issue aside the misperceptions of Lincoln and his intentions, motivations and true philosophy of government are seldom discussed completely.
One of my favorate, although less well known quotes of Lincoln: "I agree with Judge Douglas that he [a black] is not my equal in many respects, certainly not in color ? perhaps not in intellectual and moral endowments"Last edited by Dectra; 12-26-2008 at 11:38 AM. Reason: Punctuation
