    Help with Chemistry problem!

A hot piece of silver metal, 552.0g in mass, was dropped into a cup containing 332.8g of cold water. The final temperature of the water is measured to be 18.2 Celsius. It was determined that the water gained 1.238kJ of heat during the process. What was the initial temperature of the metal when it was dropped into the water? The specific heat of silver = .235J/g deg C and the specific heat of water is 4.18J/g deg C.

Studying for finals. Most of the material is easy but this type of problem kicks my ass. I appreciate the help!

Posted this in the Misc. already but they weren't being helpful today

    I don't think this is right, but I ended up with a final answer of .2445 J/g d. c

The real answer is 27.7 Celsius, but I have no clue how to get that.

Break up delta T into Ti and Tf, and remember, your Tf for metal and water are the same value. Hope that helps.

Edit: I'm pretty sure ... if I remember correctly.

Also: Perhaps you can solve for water's initial temperature using its specific heat, KJ gained, and mass.

I should mention that the change in heat of the solution is opposite of the reaction. The reaction is that of the silver losing its heat to the solution. Therefore the q(water)=-q(silver). MC(∆T)(silver)=-1238J

    Converted kJ to J btw.

Man I knew I was missing something lol.

    -1238J=552.0*.235*(18.2-Ti)

    -1238J=129.72 J/d C(18.2-Ti)

    -9.54 d C= 18.2-Ti

    -27.7 d C= -Ti

    27.7 d C= Ti

    I'm attending Florida International University.

That's what I plan on doing for grad school. I could've gone to UF and taken the accelerated pharmacy track but I went against it. I rather have something else to fall back on incase pharm doesn't work out or I find something else that interests me.

this. gen chem was a joke compared to physical chem. And agreed that this is a gen chem question, not even an analytical question, let alone a pchem question.

pchem = physical chemistry. organic is different, p chem is differnt, analytical is different. None of the chemistries are gen chem-level.

Pchem 1; I don't understand thermo or kinetics to save my life. Pchem 2 was quantum theory and is, IMO, much easier because I understand the math and the concepts much better. But as a whole, pchem sucks balls. Analytical is shytty, lots of math, careful labwork, but relatively easy. Inorganic is kinda homo-lovin but still easy. All organic classes are cake; instrumental analysis is cake; grad analytical was uber shytty but my prof got his Ph.D. before NMR was even invented, so that's why it sucked balls because he just sucks and is about to die (I hope!!). Even grad pchem was rather easy compared to undergrad pchem and we didn't even cover quantum in grad pchem.

I feel the same way about thermo. Hated it in AP chem and hating it now. Sounds like it'll be hell in P chem. Kinetics I'm good with, at least in gen chem level--I did well in that section in AP chem in high school, don't think it'll be much different in college.

    Can't wait for orgo tbh.
